Well, I finally did it; I purchased my first shotgun! :chris:

I got a Mossberg 500 Persuader. It was in my price range ($380 after tax & DROS) and it isn't one of the Big 5 ones. I plan on getting a 28" barrel for it so I can shoot skeet when I feel like it. I know it isn't the best shotgun out there, but it seems like a great first one.

I finally saw it yesterday (Tuesday) and was VERY happy with how it looked/felt. I was very surprised and happy that it comes w/ its own gun lock AND a pistol grip. I cannot wait till Saturday to pick it up!!!

Congrats man. And those are fine shot guns. My buddy got one a while back and hasn't had a single issue with it and has fired a good amount from it. They do the job.

Same here, my first and only 12 gauge. I have the 28 and the 18.5 inch barrels. Best of both worlds, hunting and home defense all in one.

When I got my shotgun I was debating between the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500. I eventually settled on the Remington because I wanted to put a top folding stock on it and the safety on the Remington was better placed for that purpose.

You could have gotten a mossberg with a bigger magazine tube for cheaper at Big 5, just saying.

Got mine at Big 5 also with the 28" barrel for $289 a year ago. Still a good choice though. Have fun!

The reason I didn't go with the extended tube version is because I intend on shooting trap/skeet with this gun as well. The model you are referring to cannot accept the 28" barrel needed for trap/skeet shooting. I believe the model you are referring to is either the 590 or the 20" 500 "Security" model.

Congrats man. Awesome gun btw. In some ways I should have gotten a regular 500 instead of the 590a1. Oh well, the 500 will serve you well into the future. Have fun and stay safe!

I totally understand! I have the same shotgun myself.

Congratz!

Actually, they make a 28" barrel for the 8 shot: http://maverickarms.com/pages/barrels.htm

The model number is 90241

What is a fun way to shoot a shotgun at the range that has an 18.5" barrel? What type of ammo?

I will be buying this barrel in the next month or two so I can shoot clays but need to know what is the best way to shoot it without it (I wanted the 18.5 barrel for home protection):

I'm waiting for my first, a Mossberg 500 Thunder Ranch, to be re-leased on Tuesday @ 1226 PST. I purchased it as another one of my home defense solutions, to go along with my 92-FS, XD-40, 10/22 (for fun) and my wife's XD-9. I am interested in installing a folding collapsible stock, so that my wife and daughter can adjust the LOP as necessary and to be able to tuck away the stock for hallway maneuverability. Can anyone tell me if this type of stock is legal in California and opinions on which stock to buy are appreciated. I'm looking for the stock to provide a bit of recoil reduction capability is desired so that my wife and daughter will be comfortable shooting it and so I won't be sore from blasting a LOT of shells down range.

Once my "Big Thunder" gets home I'll post photos of my collection.
