It comes with aluminum bases, I want to get a 1 piece steel picainny for it.

It says the mounts are weaver #46, can anyone point me to a steel version of it?

There are several manufacturers that can get you the base, even customize it for length, cut, MOA, etc. It all depends on how much you want to spend. All my rifle bases are from Murphy Precision, made here in CA. Contact Cameron @ Murphy Precision he does excellent work and their customer service is 2nd to none. They have a website if you are interested.

They are very nice! I have one on a custom .308 bolt gun I have, but on this ruger, I dont want to spend 33% of the price of the gun on a scope base... already spent over double on a trijicon accupoint! maybe a steel base that is cheaper out there?

Why, what's wrong with the scope base that came with the rifle?

Its alu... I have a trijicon scope and rings, and the rings are steel.
alu is known to change zero with big changes in temp.

I shot 40 rounds in an hour testing the rifle, my Ruger American Rifle stayed zero with the original aluminum scope base the whole time and the Rifle is HOT and my shoulder is bruised :D

and when you use it for hunting, the most you need is 2 shots!

Yea, I hear ya, but with 1300 spent into the optics and rings, I dont want to rely on a base that cost less than 10 bucks for the set.
if I had alu rings then id prolly just settle with it.

Hello Hnoppenberger.

Thanks for sharing this thread. I thought I'd hop along and ask you about this particular rifle. I am in the market for a .308 Bolt Action entry level rifle. My goal is too see if I enjoy shooting the weapon enough to join a Long Distance Precision Shooting club, going forward.

That said, how would you classify the Ruger American Rifle? Entry level .308? What kind of maximum effective range would you denote for this gun? There are always variables and feel free to bring those up.

I hope you get the answers you're looking for in this thread because I am of like mind. I want to get the most for my dollars, period.

since your pm's are off, yes the ruger is a great rifle and will get you into precision shooting cheaply, and be enough gun.

spend some money on good glass, a good tripod, and a good rear bag, a good range finder, and you will be set.

I do have a rem 700 in .308 for this purpose, the ruger is going to be for coyotes/bobcats/lions/wolfs in .243

now, can anyone point me to which steel weaver mounts I need?

A mount from another rifle may work provided the hole spacing is the same for the mounting screws. What is the spacing for the holes on the American? I have a spare Savage 110 long action base I can measure out for comparison. There are 4 holes altogether. 2 in front, two more in the rear. Spacing between the 2 holes is about .860" (front and rear). Spacing across the center is about 4.630" center to center. Like so:

o---o-----------------o---o
^________^_________^
.860"_____4.630"_____.860"

Perhaps some other people could measure out the bases for various rifles and we might find one that could fit the American.

Ruger makes no mention of it on their website, Warne and Redfield have no listings on it. It is probably just too new and you are going to have to wait for the manufacturers to come out with some.

Its a weaver #46, both front and rear. weaver makes an S46, which is the same thing in steel. Top secret information obtained!

warne also makes it, a warne 902, again front and rear.

I just ordered a Ruger American and already have a Zeiss Conquest optic that is mounted on a Warne mount. It requires a Pic rail and I am looking for a solid Pic rail for the Ruger American, one where the screws all line up without any mods.

I have pics of every long gun I own - but you just reminded me, I never took one of the American... I need to remember to take one tomorrow
