Picked mine up yesterday, except when I bought two weeks ago, it was $99.00. Rifle looks good overall, 1942 Izhevsk with matching numbers. Stock is nice, receiver looks good, it head spaced fine. The bore looks a little rough but can't tell yet if that is cosmoline or rust or dirt when I look at it with a bore light. Lands and grooves look good. Oh, yeah, most of the Big 5s I see are counterbored, mine is but what are you going to do?

Getting ready for a business trip for two weeks, unfortunately my Russian friend will have to stay in the safe for a couple of weeks before I can get her cleaned up and shoot her.

Pics and range report when I get back.

I like the M44 myself, the 91/30 is too long of a rifle for my taste especially with the 29" barrel would making it feel off balanced and clumzy. Any idea on where I can get a nice one?

Put my 91/30 in jail on Sunday 1 hour after the sale started. I was the second to buy one that day and they only had 1 left.

Buc your best shot at getting a m44 is probably the private sale forum here. Mosins have been very popular in the last few years and theres all sorts of good info in the Curio&Relic/BlackPowder forum on here.

As long as .223/5.56 ammo keeps inching to $400.00 per 1k, Mosins are going to keep growing in popularity. For those of use who like to shoot, we need a gun that is fun to shoot that is affordable to shoot. Mosins are a tremendous value as is the milsurp ammo.

I love my AR and my AR Title I but every time I go shoot with them, the $$$ are adding up. They are soon going to be relegated to "special occasion" shooters like my Garand. For taking the guns out to BLM land to plink, it's going to skew toward 9mm in my handguns and Uzi, my son's 10/22 and my Mosin. Those are all affordable to shoot.

Yeah, for some reason all of the threads on Mosins here have really gotten me interested in getting a classic since it is cheap. The M44 is my favorite of them all. I checked on gunbroker and saw prices above $150 :(

Nice first post! Welcome to CGN!

Everything except shipping to your house. Handguns still go through 01 though so only on long guns. Lots of places give discounts on parts like Grafs & Sons. I just got a scope from them for more than 20% less than I could find anywhere else.

So I get to skip the tax too if I purchase from in state also? Or do I only get to skip if it is out of state purchase shipped in to me?

Or do I get taxed no matter what because CA wants my money?

Because base price + shipping is sweet!

All of the dealers that I know of that you mail order C&R's are out of state. It's just the price they have listed plus shipping.

WOW a 20% increase over their old sale price.

I remember Big5 having them for sale at $79 one time about a year ago, but funny thing is that sometimes it's at $99 or $109. Is it because of the condition the rifles are in that dictate how Big5 lists the sale price?

All of the dealers that I know of that you mail order C&R's are out of state. It's just the price they have listed plus shipping.

Nice! I can't wait to get one and grab a 03A3, Mauser, Mosin, Garand.

Capybara

Interesting question about condition versus cost. My Big 5 has another Century imported Mosin on the shelf but it is at the $119.00, not the $99.00 I got it for, but next to it, they have a nicer condition Mosin from another importer, but it is $219.00 and then next to that they have a pseudo Mosin sniper at $619.00.

I looked over the $219.00 Mosin and the stock was nicer, the receiver was cleaner but it wasn't worth more than double the cost to me. The other $119.00 they have now was overall in pretty good shape but it had three times as much cosmoline on it as the one I bought and the stock had been snapped off and then repaired (repair looked good, a nice clean zig-zag though), so I stuck with the $99.00 I had in jail. All of them looked to be counterbored but I couldn't shine my bore light down all of the barrels.

I think Mosins are like any other C&R, you have to hunt to find what you want at the price you are willing to pay.

BucDan
06-05-2012, 4:13 PM
Just maybe. Question though, I am reading the term "counterbored" all the time with Mosins, what is it about?

No, they shoot brass cased non magnetic bullets also. Yugo would be the only surplus in this catagory but, most commercially made ammo would also be sans iron.

I believe it is when the muzzle end of the barrel bore is eroded so it is basically drilled out to a larger diameter back to the point where the rifling is still good.

I get to pick up my 91/30 tomorrow!
Slightly interesting story picking up mine:

I went in to a Big5 before this $120/rifle sale because the day before I had spotted a refurbished 91/30 sniper for $220. It was clearly mislabeled, as it had a bent bolt and the PU sniper base installed (no scope mount, or scope).
I was going to purchase it, but then an employee said they had regular 91/30s in the back for $110.
I deeply regret getting greedy at this point, as I tried to get them to match the price of the $110 mosin, as they were clearly labeled the same. The guy got his manager to come over, and after a while she noticed it was mislabeled when she tried to look up the rifle in their database (they have two prices for 91/30s based on their importer).

I came in prepared to pay the $220 for it, but just had to try and knock off some more :(
It was a shame too, since the bore looked absolutely amazing. It wasn't an original sniper, but looked very good nonetheless.

I stopped by the Big 5 the next week and saw the refurbished 91/30 sniper, now with scope attached, with a hand-written price tag of $620.

At least I get to pick up my rifle tomorrow :)

zomie
06-06-2012, 2:35 PM
Haha yeah I saw the 91/30 PU sniper there for $630 as well. I got two with the hopes of building out a PU sniper for around $300ish. It is just fun to do the work yourself and their are some great kits for doing it.

Some say to detail strip it and scrub it off with hot water and soap. Others have said to throw it in the oven, but it will smell. Others then said to shoot it, so the heat from the rifle will melt the cosmo off on your hands :43:

Mine was the same when i got it, it was slippery to the touch and looked disgusting. I youtubed a video of how to disassemble the whole thing and then went to work with froglube. Left the gun overnight and then wiped everything off the next day with a towel. The wood looks amazing and its spotless now.

Black plastic bag it, turn it upside down, put it into the sun on the back porch so all of the melted cosmoline doesn't go further into the receiver and magazine. Once it heats up, wipe off with clean rags, repeat until you are happy with it.

I swear I remember an $89 sale on Mosin Nagants there or something. I remember paying after DROS (joke right... it's C&R) and tax being $150. On the firearm sales haven't seen one lower than $135 in a while. I remember $100 being pretty standard just a few months back... inflation? Demand?

Apparently you aren't familiar with how Big 5's ads work.

They have stupidly high regular prices. Every week they rotate through a batch of guns that they put on sale for a reasonable price. If the mosin isn't on sale this week, it'll be on sale again next week or the week after. Same goes for the shotguns, .22lr rifles, "tactical" .22lr rifles, etc.

I'm also not sure why you'd waste the time going down there, when you can look at their website and see what batch of guns is on sale this week.

Alternatively you can pull the ad out of the sunday paper(and the various other editions that have ads...), and get the current list of firearms marked for the on sale price that way. Currently there are 9 firearms listed in their weekly ad, with prices.
