View Full Version : Considering a Mosin

The big 5 has them on sale for $119 (I understand they usually go for around $100). I am having a bit of an internal debate about the best way to take the rifle if I pick it up. I have shot a buddies many times and I do like the gun. There is nothing like a classic bolt action.

Option 1 (classic):
1943 Sniper:
or if I am cheap:

Options 2 (modern):
Decent long eye relief scope (looking for recommendations).

Option 3 (both)

Please keep in mine I have the skills and tools for the basic machining needed.

Most of my guns are fairly modern and setup so to be a decent distance shooters, but I also have a few black powder pistols I love too.

Looks best on shorter M30 or M44 IMO

Lots of people install long eye fixed power 2X or 4x. 2X is said to be "perfect" and more 'scout' because these Mosins were never meant to be sub MOA guns.

I tell all Mosin newbies to get a Bore Snake. That is what finally worked for me and changed inaccurate guns into real good shooters. Older rougher barrels seems to grab a lot of metal and need cleaning in way new cherry barrel just doesn't. Patches on a Mosin is like HandiWipes after a parade of cavalry. Since that surplus ammo is cheap you will also be shooting lots of rounds.

and don't mention any of your mods on those Mosin sites. Those guys are all about 'preservation ONLY'.

The key to getting into the Mosins is to buying at least 3 at a time in same transaction. $25DROS is big percentage of a $100 gun.

It makes buying things like a snake, 440rd cans of ammo, those stripper clips, and lots of cleaning stuff make more sense.

Plus it looks really cool to have 1/2 dozen matching old skool rifles lined up in a rack.

Hard to find 3 good Mosins at any one Big 5. I'd consider buying at least 4 or 5 from Buds or J&G and paying the extra "hand pick" and asking for matching stocks.

For $100 an extra few Mosins, once you got the 440 rd cans of ammo, etc is a 'can't afford not to' IMO.

I picked up a 91/30 from ammo bros when they had them on sale for $89. I never thought that this cheap rifle would be such a hit! Everyone has a blast shooting it and seem to enjoy it more than the ARs and AKs. It's amazing how much steel the 7.62x54r can penetrate, and the cheap surplus ammo is icing on the cake!

Just walk away my friend, walk away.

I pick up my 7th on Saturday. I will help you out on your research on the Mosin Nagant. If you buy one, JG has ammo for around 85 bucks for 440 rounds, I have seen it a little cheaper, but you should consider JG ships from their shop in AZ, much cheaper than those from back east.

I had thought about with the $25 fee that I should just pick up 2. I guess at this price I could pick up a 3rd and engrave Hello Kitty in the stock for the g/f just as she threatens to do to my AR. j/k

Seriously though ... It is sounding like a good rifle to pick up and with ammo at those prices it doesn't get much better. Thank you for the information and details about where to get surplus ammo quickly. I found a decent video talking about what to look over when inspecting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrQ8ssKgCEo&feature=related

Any other pointers along those lines?

Thanks I will swing by big 5 tomorrow and see what they got.

*sigh, I am going to need a bigger gun safe.

Yeah, I'm half way there. Since Squid has delineated the visual for his quote. I will harken back to what roles the 91/30 can fill in a WROL / SHTF scenario. That would be the role of Long gun or Sniper and well as Battle Rifle. Not bad for a $100.00 gun, eh? All you have to do is train with it. Shoot outdoors and indoors and train. Be accountable for your training and you'll be that much further along than so... many people who have invested in Modern platforms and subsequently done nothing of value, afterwards.

Btw, the 91/30 will probably outlast the majority of the modern platforms out there. I do have a Socom 2 and Socom 16, btw. But if anyone wants to fight on my comments, bring it on.

got my first mosin nagant about 3 weeks ago. before i even shot it i bought 2 more. one a pawn shop M44 the other a 1943 mosin 91-30. i put 60 rounds threw it and never wished i had a AR or M1 really. it is a simple bolt rifle. ammo is . 25c for a very powerful round. lots of people just want the flavor of the day. ego driven purchases. SHOWING OFF is everything. a M1 is just not worth the prices they are going for. same for the M1A. if all those Korea M1s do get to market and bring the prices down i might get one. and dont get me started on all this tactical game playing on the ranges, you will never be john wayne.

I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon but that's the best reason to buy ammo I can think of

That's what they said about Yugo 7.62x39 surplus :(. Back then it was 179 for 1120 rounds, now it's 280.
