My father found this at the range when he was picking up brass.

says .30-06 SPRG and some weird symbol i cant make out. any ideas?

he was picking up brass for me to reload my Garand for and found a handfull of these. I have never seen anything like these before.

The gun it was fired in has excess headspace.

Pretty sure that's golden bear ammo. It has that same ring at the base.

yup. just looked up golden bear headstamps and it had that same symbol.

that ring on the bottom just throws me for a loop... cant see any use for it except to keep someone from reloading in because of case seperation?

The description at JG says that it is brass plated steel cases.

Berdan primed too. Might just be an easy way to distinguish non reloadable ammo?

Notes:
Since this ammunition is loaded with steel cases, the ring on the base of each piece of brass allows the case to expand upon firing. Since steel does not fire form like brass, this extra ring helps prevent the case from breaking into two pieces during firing.
