No pic handy, but I have a $30-something LED Streamlight (thanks Amazon!) in a $20 VTac offset mount (from Parallax Tactical since I'm giving credits) on my RRA LAR-9. It's basically Streamlight's version of the Surefire G2, except it's brighter, LED, and costs less. It'd be tough to beat for the money. I also have tried a Primary Arms, a Surefire M900, and an Insight polymer full-sized pistol light of some kind. The pistol light was convenient and lighter, but the extra brightness and battery life of the Streamlight was a worthy trade-off IMO. If I were doing it again I might just go for a Streamlight TLR-1.

Sorry, make it a point to not put up pics of any of my toys with the one exception of my 10/22 :)

BUT, I do like my Streamlight TLR-1. Maybe not tacticool but it is extremely powerful in a small package that won't snag on anything.

google ar weapon light pics im sure you'll get more results. One thing to think about is where are you going to mainly use your light. In a house more than 125 lumens is more than enough. Anything more you risk getting blinded if you light up a white painted wall that is too close to you. Also get a light that had a front and rear spring such as a surfire. Leds are excellent choices because of their extended battery life. Common batteries are a plus but for 10 plus years of storage cr123 are hard to beat. Just don't mix brands or new with old ones. Also stay away from most non US made batteries since the QC is substandard...

JohnnyP, the only thing that could possibly be bad about the TLR-1s on a rifle would be that it takes more thought process to use it because of the paddle style on switch. whereas most tactical lights have momentary on switch you just press or have a tape switch. on the TLR on side of the switch is momentary, the other is constant on. I have one on my pistol and I would definitely use it on my rifle. its just like anything else you have to train and familiarize yourself with it.

SuperSet

I run a TLR-1 on the 3 o'clock position and it serves 2 purposes - I can intuitively activate it using my index/middle finger of the support hand and the extra height provides clearance for ejecting shells so malfs are prevented when going side gun (SBU). If you look at the latest video on my YouTube channel, Proctor talks about weapon light setup and demos using my setup.

Surefire 951 with rear pressure switch + SF rail mount pressure switch.
If I am using the VFG I usually operate the switch on the rear of the light with my thumb - If I am using an over rail grip I use the pressure switch on the top rail.

Can someone explain whether a Streamlight TLR-S1 is a good choice or a bad choice on an
AR?

Good choice. You'll never use the strobe feature, though. Very lightweight, very nice beam. carbine mounted pistol lights are gaining popularity among many very switched-on shooters and instructors. Give it a try and see if it works for you though.

I used one at 3:00 (left handed shooter) and activated it with either my thumb or middle finger of my support hand. You can also mount it at 12:00 in front of your front sight and activate it with your thumb.

In case you need professional validation, this is what Kyle Defoor has to say about pistol lights: "Lights on carbines- I currently run TLR-3 from Streamlight but I ran TLR-1s and 2s before. If a pistol light is just as bright I don’t see any reason to go with the big model. Smaller. lighter, faster."

G60, I always train to use my strobe on my pistol. Probably not as useful on rifle, but if im trying to engage someone with my pistol, I want to blind them a little bit extra while im also shooting them in the face. Every time Im at the range I practice with it on my M&P40 and I use thumb foward grip. Ive found its easier to quickly engage targets with it mounted because at 5-7 yards you aim the light center mass and you normally hit center mass. Very Effective.

IMO strobes and even different lumen output lights are worthless on a firearm.

The first and main purpose of a light is to identify. The less functions you have on a "tactical light" the better I've seen people fumble with their functions during night classes.

Maybe they weren't familiar with their lights but I think if it can happen during a relatively low stress environment it will happen during high stress.

Dhena, That is what is great about TLR-1s there is only 2 functions. you press once for standard beam. You press twice to two beams. I am a Corpsman in the Navy so I know about stressful situation=dexterity loss, but the TLR is pretty much idiot proof.

I've got a Elzetta like roushstage2. No pic, just look at his awesome shot and pretend it's fde or coyote brown colored. ;)

Though I do have a sling...it's easy to simply apply pressure to activate the tac tailcap. Seems fairly light, and I like the centered light.

On our setup we have no shadows noted when actually sighting at any reasonable distance. We are using irons only on our light-equipped AR. You have to get like a foot away from the target until the shadow comes into the sight pic.

Would be interested in same question for the guys running an optic. I would think it a non-issue in most cases?

The very top part of the light has a shadow, but it's not part of the light you'd be using to see something in the dark so...not an issue IMO anyways.
What flash hider/compensator is that?
Newtown Firearms powdercoated matte black. I believe their actual production ones will match everything else better.

That's a Cav Arms polymer stock in Desert Sand - it's pretty close to what it looks like there match-wise, though I don't put a high priority on things like that. In other words - "it's close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades".

I've since gone featureless on that rifle, and i like it much better. I added a grip wrap, removed the MOE grip, put some QD sockets on the buttstock/forearm and added an ambi-safety. It's one of my lighter builds (that is a pencil barrel), and it's nIce to be able to use my regular capacity magazines as well.

If it's anything like my PolyTac LED, it'll be great and super bright! I think the HP is 20 lumens brighter, but I stuck with the non-HP model as the head is smaller. The one on the HP is almost 2".

Thanks, I thought it might have been Cav Arms. I was aware that they weren't a perfect match, but it looked pretty close in your pic.

I need a front sight without a thumbwheel so I can put the light on the other side, mount it further back and activate the light with a little forward pressure of my thumb. (left-handed.) how it sits, I have to rotate my thumb around the front sight. I guess i'll dry fire a bit and see how this works out though.

Why not just turn the front sight around for now? You could move it forward and maximize your sight radius.

G60
06-18-2012, 9:21 PM
Good idea on flipping the sight around. As for sight radius, I use my front sight as a hand stop more than anything else, if I actually need to ever use my irons, they're set up with the same radius as a carbine sight block.

anymoose, did you do your paint? wondering what type/size screen or product you used? nice. thanks.

:)

Yes, I did it. I used Krylon camo and a piece of mesh from a side pocket on an old back pack

Anyone have the streamlight polytac HP? I just ordered it, any opinions?

If it's anything like my PolyTac LED, it'll be great and super bright! I think the HP is 20 lumens brighter, but I stuck with the non-HP model as the head is smaller. The one on the HP is almost 2".

I like the lil PolyTac a lot, also have ordered the HP. Should be here tomorrow. :)

anymoose, thanks for the tip, might scavenge one of the kids' old packs soon. :D

I keep a Polytac in my glove box of my truck. I have been very impressed with it so far, it's pretty bright, and it's cheap enough I wouldn't be upset if I lost it. They don't seem to feel quite as tough as the Surefire G2 series, but I guess that is reflected in the price.

Yeah that's unacceptable in a weapon light. What you got now should be a big improvement. Another reasonable option is the Surefire G2 led series if you want something with a slimmer head. They can be had for around $65 usually.

I don't use it for HD anymore. I use my XD .40 subcompact. The HP model is suppose to mean "high performance" so I don't know if that means it'll hold up better or what. I shall see.

Weapon grade lights use a spring on either end of the battery so that when the weapon recoils the batteries don't bounce off the tube cutting out the light. My Polytac HP only has the spring on the tailcap and a flat wall on the other contact end.

Not true. Many Surefire light that are used on firearms don't have spring on both ends, so is Streamlight, (TRL-series for example).
Good quality spring applies enough pressure (compression) where the batteries are always in contact, cheap Chinese (inferior metal) springs are a different story,

This is incorrect. ^^

What Surefire lights that are marketed as weapon grade don't have springs on both ends? Remember Surefire makes lights that are not considered weapon grade, such as the new Fury.

I have 2 X300's, both with springs on either end, a G2X LED, same thing. An Aviator that also has them on both ends, E1L, Millenium series etc all the same.

I don't have much experience with that light so I can't really say one way or another. However they seem to be popular due to their price point. I do however know how all my Surefire weapon lights are set up.

I don't think having one or two springs matters that much on a ar-15 the recoil on them aren't that bad. Perhaps on a shotgun its different story. Having a big spring is good though. After looking at the spring on the HP I have to say its rather small, the spring on my UTG has a bigger and stiffer spring.

No, not under their "Weapons Light" section.

I have a G2X Tac and it seems to only have the one big spring in the tailcap. I use it handheld with the pistols.

Thanks for the infos. :)

I took an extra spring I had and kinda got it to interlock between the spring on the streamlight to give it a little more pressure. Don't know how it would hold up but for now its turning on and off.

I agree ^^

However I'm curious now about certain weapon Lights and what they were designed to handle. I feel like many were probably just designed as pistol lights and carried over to rifles.

Reading over on candle power forums they really beat it in your head to use a quality shock resistant LED module and a battery compartment with springs on either end. Which is why Surefire lights or Surefire based modified lights are very popular for these applications.

Probably the most popular flashlight used on weapons are Surefire G2 (+X) series and there are numerous companies that manufacture mounts for 1" type and similar flashlights.
Surefire doesn't list weapon lights under section because it's not Surefire specific mount (nothing more or less), Surefire prefers you pay more for their specific (propriety) light/mount.

I think springs and the quality of springs do matter even on an AR-15 think of Eotech's they had issues with their 512's or weapon sights with batteries running parallel with the barrel. They had issues with springs weakening and shutting off the reticle but apparently these issues have been resolved I forget how but I think they added springs.

I didn't use the pressure switch so I hated the twist on constant on it seemed like every little bump would set off the momentary function. I didn't like that it was a yellow light (xeon) and it wasn't that bright and it seemed like the battery life wasn't the greatest. For 35 bucks you could of got a higher quality streamlight polytac.

I got to handle a hellfire light last year at a gun show in VA. That thing is insane on so many levels, but when you have a Dillon mini gun you need equally crazy gear to mount to it I suppose. I would give anything to do a night shoot with that setup.
