I been looking for a 8mm Mauser for a couple weeks. So I called a couple Big 5 stores around my area to check if they any in stock. One of the stores got the Yugo M48 for $399.. My question is do they usually go that high for a M48? All inputs would be appreciated. Thanks

Thats high. Current prices on their German K98s (Russian capture) are $400 for what they have left (if any). M48s in this area Merced, Atwater, Madera, Fresno I've seen for $350 or less depending on sale. Maybe they thought you meant K98? Generally the M24/47s with a straight bolt were a little better made than the M48's and are $200 at Big 5. The M48 from Big 5 I got is a dog and looked worse after I degreased it... and it has a sticky bolt.

Been trying to find a cheap one here in Utah after I snagged a spankin' new barrel in cosmo from Zatzava arsenal that Copes (i think) was selling. Looks like I should be skimming the classifieds here.

I got mine for free about 8 years ago ... it's beat to hell though, was my brother in law's truck gun.

I really hope it is a K98, if that is the case I might go and check it out. But on the other hand, I don't think Big 5 carry K98s.
I will start to look at the marketplace more often for it. Thanks for the replies.

Big 5 does carry K98's. I'm picking up a Russian capture duv 41 Monday. They are leftover from the last big import a few years ago. They are very scarce but I ran across a couple recently. I don't discourage anyone from buying an M48 if they are great rifles. Many people have great examples of these, but I feel I got burned on mine. With the amount of cosmoline and other crap in Yugoslavian rifles it's hard to make a good judement on fit, finish, and funtionality of these at the store. One of my 24/47s was a total hag of a rifle until I totally degreased it. Now its one of my favorites. But these were mostly (if not all) made prewar and the M48s are post war communist production. At at least $100 less I don't think you can go wrong with a 24/47 for a great Mauser.

$399 is the Big5 price for their m48. I just bought one.
But...they sold it to me for $299. They told me I just missed the sale and were impressed I came ready with safe affidavit ready.

Something is screwy about all this. Does Big 5 leave it to their managers to mark things up or down if so desired? Surely a real K98 should bring more than a Yugo in a legitimate market.

Now that you mentioned it. My friend and I went to a local Big 5 to check out Mosin. The price tag on the Mosin was $149, but the manager bumped it down to $120 for my friend. So I think they ( the store managers) can mark down the price.

Were these CAI imports or PW imports?

the way big 5 works is that the normal price is double the standard price and when their stuff is on sales then you get the real price and the managers have to power to give you the last "sales" price if you ask them

bought mine at big 5 for 279. I felt ripped off because I got the only one they had- no bluing, only one matching number and no sight hood, and when I picked it up 11 days later, the ones they had there had ones with perfect bluing and a sight hood, and now I really don't want to buy a gun from big 5 anymore.

The one he picked up is PW imports. Very nice wood and smooth bolt.

Have you local Mgr do a stock run. I know that the Fresno Big 5 Clovis and Shaw has 2 M48's. They put them on sale in the store only and never run an ad anymore on them. I know the Dinuba Big 5 has 2 Yugo SKS. Price 399.99

I just visited my local Big 5 in NorCal today just looking around and the M48 they had was $399 also.

Big five doesn't make ANY money on their firearms... when they have sales. But when they have to make a lot more. this is from a big five employee

The last time I purchased they were $279.99. Keep going in and checking prices. Also, after a purchase is made, should the item price change, they will credit you the dif. That is good for 30 days post purchase.

This doesn't make sense.

let me explain, according to the salesperson at my local big five, they believe that the more guns people own the more ammo they will shoot and therefor the more ammo sales they will make.

I bought one of these! The second one in the list, I've never seen a prettier M48. I swear this thing was a Mitchell's Mauser but without the paper work. I am sucker for Yugo Mausers. Goodness, how I love them...

I generally do a search in the marketplace to get values based on sales.

There were a couple of them that sold within the last months that range from

$230
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=568727&highlight=m48

$280
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showpost.php?p=8236994&postcount=2

$300
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=530296&highlight=m48

Rifle is also C&R.

Big 5 will also charge tax and dros on top of that price.

Keep an eye on the Marketplace for a seller near you at a price that you like.

I bought a Yugo M-48 from Big 5 on Oct. 2011. Paid $400.00 bucks. The rifle is pristine. Appears never issued. Went on sale 4 weeks later for $265.00! No regrets since the rifle is as new. Runs wonderful I might add. Four milsurp rifle purchases with Big 5 and no regrets. Just pay attention as with any purchase!

If it cycles smooth and shoots well $400 is a good price. I paid substantially less and got a pig. You get what you pay for I guess. :(

I'm curious... is your bolt matching? Is it a wide arc or fully bent bolt?

I got curious and went to local Big5..M48 in jail now...:p

The manager said last one and no more m48'sor K98's that she was aware of.

It was marked down to 299.00, not great but it was in really nice shape and the crest marking was very crisp...find out more when clean it up a bit.

When my SVT40 gets here was going to meet local calgunner and will post some pics of both guns.

Fair market retail value seems to be around $250 right now. If you pay more, it better be in great shape.

Just got an email from Graff and sons.

They have M48s for $230. Interesting the email says with accessories, the web site says rifle only.
