I was considering putting one on my 1911 - read about the Docter sight, Burris Rapidfire, etc. Seems the STS with the dovetail mount may be a good setup. Any thoughts on this vs night sights?

Red dots are really for competition. Most have to be turned on and off. They take a great deal of practice to pickup the sight picture quickly. It took me 6 months of shooting a USPSA match every week to really get comfortable with the dot. They are not a substitute for night sights and will only work in darkness with a weapon mounted light. If you decide to get one, get the 7MOA because the 3.5MOA will appear as a .438" dot at 12 yards.

I have 2 Trijicon Red Dots on my Open Glocks. These are no longer made.

I know they are mostly for competition - but from what I have read and watched on youtube since these are battery powered they still illuminate a red dot in full darkness. Am I wrong about that?

I have been thinking about getting into some comps and have been modifying my gun accordingly.

Yes, a dot in darkness is only a dot, you can't see anything beyond that. You need a weapon mounted, or hand held, light to shoot in the dark. While night sights glow in the dark, they don't illuminate the target. They are a slight advantage in low light.

RDS's are the rage among the tactical EDC types; not just for competition.

IIRC Gabe Suarez's company sells a ton of them

Why are the regular sights still on the gun? And what does EDC mean? Have you shot that in a competition match? And why is the barrel threaded? I thought that was illegal in California.
