My father had a Universal M1 Carbine and he had since passed away. My mother has this in her safe and wants to give it to me. Is there anything I need to do, or can I just assume possession? Is it legal to transfer to me with the original 15 round detachable magazine?

I think you can just fill out the state form and $19 for registration? You never saw a 15-round magazine.

Presuming fixed stock (not the paratrooper folding stock), CA-resident Mom can give it to her CA-resident son, no paperwork. Intrafamilial transfer requires paperwork only for handguns, until Jan 1, 2014.

If Mom is out of state, have to transfer through a CA-FFL; Mom is still alive, so that would not be an inheritance.

But do start looking for the 10-round magazines.

Yeah, she is in the state - thanks for the tip.

Do you have a link to where I can find information on this?

'This' is not clear, but in context, I think you may mean
