I'm in need of a pistol chambered in 357 Sig. (I've got most major calibers and manufacturers covered. I have a 357 conversion barrel on a polymer pistol, but have decided to leave that pistol to 40S&W and buy a dedicated 357, so I've also plenty of ammo already.)

For those who shoot the round, do you have any suggestions or observations based on different pistols? What is your favorite?

I'm currently deciding between a P226/229 and M&P357, although the new Sig 1911s in 357 are pretty tempting as well.

All insight is appreciated.

I recommend the 229 as the platform that the round was designed to function from. While I really like the M&P, there may be some issues cropping up when chambered for this round...might give them a little time to sort it out

IIRC -- .357 Sig is made by necking down the 40S&W case. As 9mmepiphany pointed out it was originally designed for the 229 Sig. Again, IIRC, Sig sold a version with two barrels; and it uses the same magazine. .357 Sig is a niche cartridge that's likely to be an orphan one day. .40 S&W won the 10mm auto war as the winner -- and will likely be around for a long time. IMO, Stay with Sig and have the 40 S&W option.

I shot one of those in OR a couple of years back...it was very accurate and very smooth shooting

Thanks for the input. Owning a 226, I was partially hoping to hear that the M&P is the bees knees just to try something new, or see if I forgot something.

The 229 seems the best choice although I'll continue to mull it over a while. The idea of a 1911 and 357 sig in a 5" inch barrel is attractive, but I may have to add to the collection once available.

No, it's a new cartridge, while it may seem to be a necked 40, it is a new load, designed to have the same power as a .357 Remington Magnum in an auto gun. I carry a G31, it is brutal to shoot

I own one Glock (G33) and fours Sigs (P239, P229, P226ST, SP2340) chambered in 357SIG. All of the Sigs are pleasant to shoot but the subcompact Glock can be a bit of a handful.

i get one that you can do a caliber/barrel change to 9 or 40. Just to have options

Thanks, any noticeable difference in the 226 vs 229? Preference? I've shot both in 9mm and couldn't tell much apart. Is there a higher muzzle rise in the 229?
