Im trying to decide what to do with some money....thought itd be cool to have a 308 carbine.

I have an N.M S.S m1a I bough around 2000. I was thinking it might be more fun if it was more carbine like....16" barrel, forward mount red dot.

Or...

just get a saiga in 308 if price is about the same

Anybody have any ideas about the who, what, when, where.... on how I might go about the conversion of the m1a.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Might be easier if you found someone to trade with you or sell yours and buy a new SOCOM II.

The SOCOM has a Springfield proprietary gas system. Cutting down to 18" you could use any M14 armorer.

In the end, conversion is going to cost significantly more that a trade or sell/buy.

I'd happily trade my SOCOM for a SS NM!

Just buy a Socom.

Be better to trade for one. Probably cost you a pretty penny to have an armorer swap the front end with whatever the cost in parts.

If it's a good shooter I'd keep it and get whatever carbine you want. If it's not a spectacular shooter then sell it or rebarrel it to be what you want.

Socoms suck in my opinion. Great blaster carbine but for the price I would want better than 2" groups and that's all it'll give you.

I love my M1A Loaded SS, she shoots fantastic as is. Don't sell it, you will regret it down the road!

For my range/plinker/go to gun is my Saiga AK 7.62X39mm Converted to SAW pistol grip+Magpul ACS, She has Tritium Night sights with a Micro-Red Dot as a Co-Witness. 5000+Rds thru her, very RUGGED and accurate 100-300M it's intended design etc. Ammo is cheap!...Did I say CHEAP!

Keep the M1A NM and man-up and buy the SOCOM.

Turners Torrance has first edition on consignment for 1350 now!

If you really want a short barrel .308 get a socom or like you mentioned, the Saiga, some 16" variant of .308 AR, FAL, HK91, etc.

Or you could trade the NM for a Socom. If I had a Socom, I would trade you in a heart beat for a NM.

What? On a Socom II, I could understand, but a scout?

Call Ron Smith at Smith Enterprises. He is the man, but his work is also costly.I had a SOCOM and looked into converting it into a Scout , almost exactly the opposite what you are looking into doing.

As others said before you will run into problems with the SA proprietary gas system on the SOCOM. The one piece Gas Lock Front Sight (GLFS) and muzzle break will be the costliest to replace. Smith Enterprises has a SOCOM conversion that runs about $225 part #2001V. If doing that get a SOCOM barrel while you are at it and have Mr. Smith install it (no part number on their site). Just a guess but you are looking at $600 or so for the work.

Personally, I would buy a used SOCOM, a trigger job on it and lots of ammo, AND keep your NM.

I ended up trading my SOCOM for the Scout. But this is just MHO.

Either way its worth a call to Mr. Smith.

Bronco1500..

Any word on what you are going to do? If you are still looking check M14 Firing Line. Lots of good experience in that forum also.

If I had a NM SS M1A I would not trade it for a SOCOM. The NM will shoot circles around the SOCOM. You'd be better off buying a used SOCOM unless your really tired of the NM M1A.

I used to have a SOCOM and Loaded M1A. I still have the Loaded M1A. I really didnt like the SOCOM all that much. My buddy has a scout and that's a great rifle to have.

As others have said, trade for a Scout or keep what you have and save up & buy a Scout.
