View Full Version : My first 80% AR Lower: After its 100%, how to "finish" it?

I've read a few conflicting stories about how to finish "home built" lowers. Ideally, I'd hope for a Type III hard anodize, but (question #1) that would mean I'd probably have to ship my completed lower off? If I do ship it off, (question #2) I have to ship it as a firearm and pay UPS/FedEx's premium rates? Which, in turn, (question #3) means that when it gets shipped back it has to go thru an FFL and (question #4) I get to wait 10 days to pick it up? I've also read that most places that will accept the lower for annodizing require it to be serialized somehow. (Question #5) Is that as simple as me having some alphanumeric etched in that I made up? Like "BigJ1"?

(Question #6) What about other ways of finishing off the lower I might be able to do myself? Duracoat or other?

Thanks for your time guys.

Me three. I'm more interested in basic protective finishes a la military. I have a pre-ban Colt Match Target HBar and I don't think that matte black is anodizing... but then again I am a programmer so what the heck do I know?

I cerakote my receivers.

if you must, there are local anodizers in the south bay that can do it for you on the spot, therefore they won't need a FFL. dig around in the 80% threads, I recall someone using a plater in San Jose/Santa Clara area. "p k" something I think.

For Type III hard anodize you can try US Anodizing, Inc.
http://www.usanodizing.com/index.htm
http://www.usanodizing.com/contact.htm

Q1. ship stripped lower only. make sure to smooth out all sharp edges.
Q2. can ship by ground or USPS, I think USPS priority is cheaper and faster.
Q3, Q4. when it's done, they ship back to you directly no need to go thru FFL.
Q4. Per BATF you don't need SN on home built lower. you can add it later if you plan to sell it.
Q5. any way you like it.
Q6. I don't know.

You can buy a cerakote or durakote kit from brownells.

Please DO NOT ship your lower out unless the anodizing shop has an FFL. It will be bad news for both of you if you do.

Either get it done locally while you wait, or do it yourself with the options listed above.
Also, don't try to parkerize it ;)
