View Full Version : How-to-tell authentic Colt 1911 magazine?

05-29-2012, 5:40 AM
i was looking into picking up a couple magazines from the marketplace and wanted to know if there's a sure way to tell if the colt 1911 magazines are authentic? It's labeled "Colt 45 Auto", no periods seen.
These are the mags in question (op owner can request photos to be taken down). So far, i still can't seem to find out anything concrete. Can anyone chime in that's knowledgeable w/ Colt 1911 mags?

There's an on-going discussion in 1911forum.com here:

can anyone confirm or deny their authenticity before i pull the trigger? tia

That two tone mag is worth more than most of my guns!

The old two-tone mags cost too much if you're buying them, and the two I have aren't for sale.

Don't worry about genuine Colt mags because they often buy from companies like Metalform that can be hit & miss.

Everybody has a favorite and sometimes 1911s are just picky about brand. Go buy new (or good used if you find them) Wilson or other high-quality magazines. Besides Wilson, I've had good luck with Tripp, Novak, and some Chip McCormick magazines.

I used to have 3 or 4 of them.

My GM1 found a box of old 1911 magazines left over in a back corner of the armory on USS LASTSHIP. This was 2002 or so, well after the last 1911 had been turned in. I got 12 or 13 of the magazines ... and some of them were the half-blued ones.

Some punk broke into my last house a few years back, and snagged my nice shiny brand new Sig 1911, and cleaned me out of all my magazines. Some punk in Mexico is probably using those mags now, no idea what he had.

How much are those two tones worth?

from my understanding, C top right of base is colt and M is metaform. But my concern are the ones with no markings. i already have CMC power mags and metaform mags, figure it wouldnt hurt to overkill on mags. could always use it for the range i guess.

the font looks off to me, and usually there is at least one if not two dots -- one before 45 and one after auto

.45 AUTO.

Couple hundred bucks, depending on condition. Mine were all well used, definitely not new in the package or anything.

Colt uses the Rampant Colt logo on their mags. The ones you have pictured are aftermarket.

I think Colt only started using the Rampant Colt logo on the magazines in the 70s and beyond. For magazines made in the 50s and 60s there was no logo, only lettering similar to the pic above. But the few that I have use a different font and have periods before 45 and after AUTO.
