A light oiling is fine, but wet just collects any dust and unburned powder. Most of the parts move just a small amount and don't have much of a bearing load.

why dry?

Light coat of grease is all you need. Never had an issue with my mossberg 500.

A thin coat of oil on the operating rods (light grease if you are going to be doing a class with a lot of firing involved) is all that's really needed. Running a Mossberg or Remington pump as wet as an AR doesn't really add a lot of value and is a magnet for dirt and powder fouling inside the receiver.

A light coat of oil on the exterior blued steel and maybe a quick swipe with CLP or similar in the bore before storage is all that's needed otherwise.

Ability to run dry is one of the beauties of a pump

I tend to lube things including my Mossberg so they're on the wet side.

a Light coat of grease should last a long time

I use pretty heavy duty grease on my 500 and the receiver has not been cleaned in 400 or so rounds. The grease stays very well and depending on how often you shoot, you shouldn't have to clean the receiver either.

Little bit of oil on the action bars and a little bit of oil in various places per the instruction manual and that's it... Large of amounts of lubrication are great for other endeavors but not in my shotguns...
