View Full Version : PMC .223 or AE-223? EDIT: How about Prvi 5.56?

Is either one of these better than the other, brand or performance wise? I looked around online a bit and seemed to run across PMC being preferred a bit more. The PMC is $.35/rd and the AE is $.34/rd plus a 1,000rd ammo can. With the PMC, I also do not have to order 1,000 rounds, which is cool if the PMC is "better." I'll just supplement my current X-TAC supply and get my brass-cased round count to ~1,000.

I have some PMC X-TAC 5.56 still and it works just fine. Then again, so does the TulAmmo I buy for ~$.27/rd; just not as accurate of course. I'm just looking to get some more brass-cased ammo and can't seem to find it for less than roughly $.35/rd right now.

I could also backorder XM193 for $.35/rd too.

*Prices are to my door*

Thanks guys!

55gr pmc is preaty good up to 100 yards and ok at 200..
Passed that it opens a bit more..
Pmc is good value if your plinking and are cool with 4 to 6 inches at 200y
That's been my experience :)

I appreciate the response! I've never had/shot either, so I'm just not sure which way to go on this one. :)

Aside from bulk M193 when I can find it (Centurion, AE, etc.), PMC is my favorite practice ammo.

It's a little on the underpowered side, but most bulk rifles (Tier 2/Tier 3) tend to beaverage shooter & average rifle. MUCH better on a rifle than steel-cased CRAP, & more accurate too - that's why I prefer it.

Shoot with confidence!

+1 Just what the previous guys were saying. PMC is great for the range and anything under 200 yards. I'm saving my 62gr green tips for the zombie apocalypse.

I like the American eagle 223 but PMC is also good as stated above,

Really, I don't think you can go wrong with either choice,

I would take the AE 223 over the standard PMC 223, but would ( And do buy by the case a lot ) take the PMC X-Tac over both of those choices.

X-Tac is better...So if you are looking for improvement in groups you are going the wrong way.

And you're using it in AR's chambered in 5.56 NATO?

I've run a few thousand rounds of PMC through various rifles I have & it's always proven to be consistent, reliable, & as accurate as anything else of it's class. I buy whatever brass cased ammo I can get the best deal on. PMC, AE, XM193, Centurion, IMI, whatever. None of them have given me any problems. Just don't expect to win matches with any of the above. I get about 3"-4" @ 100 with irons using any of the above. I know some guys here can get .25" groups while doing backflips out of a jeep with Irons, but I'm just your average guy with not so great eyes.

I think the best deal going right now is from www.freedommunitions.com.

.223 is fine in a 5.56 chamber. Op find some AE 5.56 from cabelas for $6.99 with free shipping.

I shoot mainly PMC at the range and I prefer it to the other various stuff I have shot. I like PMC a lot.

I would try a few boxes of PMC and see if you like it before committing to the 1000. PMC works great in my rifles but hasn't for some people.

On one of my rifles when it was new, PMC bronze would short stroke it. AE never did. I usually use 5.56 though but back when .223 could be had for cheap I got a lot of it. Now that rifle is no longer new, the short stroking with PMC is happening less and less. I guess I'm saying the same thing as someone else said, PMC seems a little weaker than the AE.

Awesome replies everyone, thank you! This is why I opted to start a thread and ask before committing to either.

I'd like to stick with X-Tac as that's what it's zeroed with, but that is $.40rd (that I can find anyways).
And you're using it in AR's chambered in 5.56 NATO?
I would be, yes. Not sure what the problem is though? .223 works in a 5.56 chamber.

They are out of that, but they have the 100 round boxes for $35.99 each. Not sure if $.36rd is good, even with the "scare" going on?

Thoughts about Prvi 5.56 M193?

I used privi .308 and it was OK.. accurate.
The rims were to thick for my hand priming tool when I went to reload them.

Shot Prvi 5.56 M193 on Friday, only 200 rnds, new AR, first time out, zero issues.

I got mine from http://www.sgammo.com/ but www.ammoman.com also has good prices.

Last time I ordered from SG, a couple of months ago, it was $298.75 delivered for 1000 rnds, 30/rnd. Not bad.

Just checked SG, holy moly, that price just went through the roof, wtf?

Thoughts about Prvi 5.56 M193?

I bought a couple of boxes when I bout my PMC a while back. Of the little I shot it shot fine. However, I seemed to be more accurate with the PMC. I would pick up some more for the right price though..

Thoughts about Prvi 5.56 M193?

I have some (and have shot some)... as well as XM193, M855, PMC... Prvi functions as well and is as accurate as the rest...

I buy whatever is priced best at the time (and it always changes)...

As stated above, Prvi has gone way up in price... when I bought it, it was much cheaper.

shot a bunch of prvi through my m4gery, seemed on par with the AE xm193. Only difference I noticed is that the prvi left a christmas confetti mess of red and green flecks in the action. Sealant from the primer? Any case, worked well for me, would buy more for the ammoman price I'd bought it for.

Im a fan of PMC though. I cant say I have really put any effort into testing it, but I get the feeling the PMC is a tad more consistent. But if choosing between the two, I will pick whatever I can get cheaper at the time.

Well, in light of all of that, what's a good or decent price per round nowadays for good brass cased 5.56? Ammo Depot has a Memorial Day sale today; not sure what they've got in 55g brass case though. I know they have AE XM855 for $349.99+tax for 1,000 rounds.
Worst case, I'll just save the X-TAC I have for now and just keep plinking with steel cased ammo. That AE 5.56 from Cabela's seems decent enough I suppose - $.36rd shipped.

PSA right now has both PMC .223A and 5.56 X-Tac available with free shipping through the Memorial Day holiday. The .223 with free shipping is comparable in price to the 5.56mm deal Cabela's was running earlier last week.

.223: http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ammunition/rifle-ammunition/223-5-56/pmc-223a-55gr-fmj-20rd-box.html

5.56: http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ammunition/rifle-ammunition/223-5-56/pmc-x-tac-55gr.html

If you are shooting steel cased the MFS .223 is on sale at PSA also. Have usually only shot Wolf but on some other forums people say MFS is somewhat better given the zinc plated cases. PSA is only selling it in 500 round lots. I went in for one half case of it to see at the price.

That's where I found the Prvi at. I actually found genuine M855 for sale, shipped, for $.35rd from a Calgunner. I guess $.35 is decent nowadays. Better than the other Calgunners and sites selling M193/M855 ammo for $.40+rd

If you are not doing precision, all those will be find up to 300 yards. I shoot them and I hit the targets.

Haven't done a 100 yard test for accuracy, but I can hit the general head shot within a 100 yards with either pmc, ae or prvi

Thanks for the link. I found the PMC, AE and Prvi through Gun-Deals, Ammoseek and Slickguns. I've decided to buy through a fellow Calgunner instead of a company [from out of CA]. :)

Very good to hear. I'm not doing precision with my AR, more like minute of man. I need to start stocking up on ammo, so I now know what some good options are. Of course, then I start taking a peek at a Saiga in 5.45x39 last night...grrrr. I think I know what's next on the list, especially with the price of the surplus ammo for it! :D

I'm saving my 62gr green tips for the zombie apocalypse.

A horde of Zombies will typically require close up head shots, I would use M193 over M855, here's why (http://ammo.ar15.com/ammo/project/term_m193orm855.html). And don't tell me that Zombies can be taken down with a smooth hole, there are tough Zombies, so a more consistent fragmentation is always a plus.

It was $ 10.76 box 20 on sale at Midway. I know that most of you are not looking for something that expensive, but I prefer to shoot zombies at 200 yards, because that far away they dont smell as much. The Privi are loaded with 69 gr hp match bullets. Makes a mess outta their heads.....using Stag model 6 , heavy barrel SS.
