It is my understanding that if you have a featureless, unconverted Saiga and legally owned/possessed hi cap magazines you are 100% legal.

Although naturally standard AK mags will not fit a stock Saiga.

That understanding is incorrect. Federal law is at play here, not California.

Correct. 922r is your enemy using >10 round magazines in a Saiga.

So if I convert to use old import AK mag and want to keep featureless what and how many parts would I have to have from US?

Another words which parts to most people change to keep imported parts under 10? I don't want to have to use a BB

Or do you think maybe more cost effective to go with US made featureless AK instead?

You can change the piston the forward grip remove the standard stock use a stock & pistol grip combo (wrap the pistol grip) and US MADE saiga mags.... That's w/o doing a full conversion... Or you can do the conversion & wrap ur grip

So what is the issue with an unconverted, stock Saiga with say, Promag 30 rd Saiga mags, presuming the mags are lawfully obtained and possessed?

Federal law requires all arms imported to be sporting. More that 10 rounds makes it unsporting so you have to add a certain number of us made parts so that this law doesn't apply.

Its just that I already own pre ban AK mags so I thought I need to do conversion.

No its not the more than 10 rounds that triggers 922r standard ak mags do not fit saigas because you need to install a bullet guide in order for standard mags to work. The bullet guide triggers the 922r. I believe a standard saiga has 14 imported parts. 922r states that you may not have over 10 imported parts. So you would need to change out 4 things (stock,forearm,piston,1 mag part) However i do not recommed doing the mag parts because if you use someone elses other foreign ak mag, you have created an AW under federal law. Also threading a saiga barrel creates another 922r part which would mean you would need an additional US part. Hope this kinda clears it up.

Same goes with a pistol grip aswell +1 another us part. So putting both a treaded barrel for muzzle device and pistol grip would essentally put you at 16 which is a standard AK, which you may aswell do a full conversion because the standard saiga trigger pull is garbage.

It would not in compliance with 922r

I'm not sure what would be needed to convert an AK mag to work in a Saiga, but note this:

In CA you can only modify one of your (pre 2000 owned) large capacity magazines to work in another weapon as long as it still functions in the original firearm. If it can't, you would be "manufacturing a large capacity magazine" and a felony. Thus the mag would still have to work in a standard AK as well as the Saiga.

You don't touch the mags, you make two relatively minor modifications to the rifle.

If you want to leave it in the stock configuration (don't know why the trigger sucks) then you change the hammer, disconnector, the handguard, and the gas piston. Now add the feed ramp and your GTG using any mags.
You will need to adjust the mag catch to fit your mags.
