Hello,
I could use some help here. I decided to build a mosin for kicks....not really the dream gun but somthing intristing to do. So Ive purchased a 1/2" tall solid steel rail and I am going to tig weld it to the hex reciver. My problem is going to be getting it strait in line with the barrel. Any ideas that might help me on this issue?

please dont just suggest I buy a rock solid or ati rail. The point of the gun is to be a little differnt and just have some fun with the build.

So far Ive turend the barrel down on a lathe (took 4" off) and the rear sight dove tail is smooth with the rest of the barrel. And of course it now has a new bolt. Looks great already.

Im stumped on how to get the rail perfect. Any help would be great.

Thank you.

If you think you're going to get any sort of positive response to this, you're delusional.

Get a block of aluminum, drill/pocket a hole the size of the barrel, pocket a hole large enough and the right shape for the rail material, slide both in. Hold in place with a clamp on the other end.

ETA: Use a welding bench/other level surface to set the block down flat.

I doubt you will find a true surface to bore line on these, they have been polished to death during build and rebuilds.

I suppose you could install a laser in the bore and mount a lazer on the rail in good scope mount with a precision machined spud and intersect both lazors at some known/unknown distance, then thru shimming and clamping rail, try welding.

You only get one try.

Oh sweet onion chutney, please don't do that to a Hex receiver.

Zero'd lasers in the bore and the on the rail as mentioned about would be the way I would go seems like it's pretty solid. I'm curious to see how this turns out.

That barrel looks pretty decent. Are you going to parkerize it or duracoat it or something?

Its going to be duracoat. Most likley coyote tan.

What kind of barrel is that?

stock barrel, Just cut down & re-crowned. I also welded up the rear pin holes and took down the dove tail.
