I was on my way to the desert and decided to stop by Walmart as they were just opening 6AM. I picked a few snacks decided to check out their ammo supply. They had 762x39 Tulammo for $5 a box. I figured I might as well pick up a few boxes....NOT! the guy at the counter tells me they can't sell ammo before 7AM? WTF? Are they afraid someone is going to shoot somebody between the hours of 6-7? I was in a hurry so didn't make a stink of it. Anyone else hear of this or was the guy too lazy to find the key?

Never heard of this before. I wonder what their reasoning is.

That particular wal-mart's policy. You ask the higher ups that is what they will tell you

If you ask the underlings, they will say it is a federal law or some weird bs like that

The company can set policy however it chooses, theres nothing wrong with that. The problem is the kid on the floor feeling the need to open his mouth and try to justify the policy. Calling it law ends the conversation quicker than saying thats how Walmart chooses to do business. Posting a sign would make sense, but I don't think I've ever seen that when I'm buying ammo. And I've run into an 11 day waiting period on 2 of my last 3 purchases. Once from a LGS and once from a home based FFL.

That's my Walmart's policy, but it depends on who is working! Who buys 7.62x39 at Walmart? That stuff is supposed to come in a crate.

It probably depends on which WM it is. I tried to buy ammo one time at a WM in Sacramento after 9PM. They wouldn't sell it to me, but they said the one in Stockton (open 24 hours) can. I drove all the way there, and they sold it to me. I asked, and they can't sell only between 12AM and 6AM because that is when they restock. Stupid? Yes. But that's their store policy.

Walmart has several crazy policies that I run into over the years. Still a good place for cheap practice ammo.

Just sayin...

It's policy, not FUD. It's also the same across the country, but I have taken shotgun ammo up front and bought it there.

Looks like someone forgot to lock the display cabinets since the ammo is usually kept in locked cabinets :D

Birdshot is generally kept outside the glass case at my walmart, unless it is the expensive stuff

Not shotgun ammo. They've always been out in the open shelves at the Milpitas Walmart.

This...

Only certain employees can sell ammo at most locations. The ones that do have to get some type of training/certification for the store. If they are not there to ring you up, they typically decline to sell it to you. My WM is 24 hour and at odd hours I have had this happen, but they were kind enough to explain why.

Walmart has a policy that only certain sales associates can sell ammo. It was probably just the case of none were available at that time. It's not a law, just a policy like others have stated.

I bought some ammo at my local Walmart one time and the guy opened up the case and pulled out the ammo, etc., no big deal.

The next time I went some chick was working in that area and she made me stand like 7 feet away by the register before she would even open the case and take the ammo out.

I thought that was strange.

We have a Super Walmart opening in a bit kinda near me, so it will be interesting to see what they carry.

I once showed up at walmart at 9:50pm and asked someone to send someone to the ammo counter. They showed up at 10:05 and wouldn't sell me anything even though i was there before 10:00... I was not a happy clutch.

this is all weird.... I've bought early at mine.... and late. I once bought a case of 12ga, a bulk pack of .223, a bulk pack of .45 a box of condoms, and a box of diapers at 01:30. I got a really funny look from the cashier.

From what I understand, any Walmart has to follow the laws and regs of the particular city that they are in.

The Walmart near me won't sell ammo before 8:00am or after 9:00pm. This is the local city law.

So its not Walmart policy, although I'm not saying that the employees are not saying that, but that's why WMs in different cities have different rules.

Now, if each WM does or does not follow the laws all the time...now thats something different.

It's Walmart... what you expecting from their employees? They aint rocket scientists. :P

I once had one of their employees at the gun counter tell me that it is only legal to shoot someone attacking you in your own home with a semi auto handgun... revolvers are absolutely illegal because by pulling on the hammer...you've now premeditated murder.

i would say this, and as has been mentioned they only have a few people who can sell it to you. i got lucky one time. i got off work at 9:45, got there at 10 and the guy stocking the candy and stuff in the main isle told me the person who is authorized to sell leaves at 10pm, if they are still here they can sell it to me.

Same here..... in Arizona. It ain't a California thing guys, it's a Walmart corporate policy. Their store, their rules. Might have something to do with having an employee on-hand who Walmart trusts to sell ammo (seems like maybe only certain employees are authorized to handle ammunition), which would explain why a few people are saying that they HAVE purchased ammo at night.

Its gotta be the guy authorized to handle the ammo thing. I've never tried to buy late at the 24 hr WM by me, but I've been in a couple times when the sporting goods register was closed, and the guy who opened the cabinet for me had to walk me over to the automotive register or to a front register. He had to give the ammo to the cashier while I waited in line.
