View Full Version : AR bolt removal help

AR newbie here. New M&P15 OR. I was field stripping and following the instructions here under the thread: "lightly oiled or wet oiled AR15". My intent was to familiarize myself with the weapon, clean and lubricate it before its first range trip. I ran into a problem trying to remove the bolt from the bolt carrier. With the bolt pushed back, I was unable to (easily) rotate the bolt cam pin 1/4 turn and lift out. I was reluctant to muckle onto it hard with a needle nose pliers or vise grips thinking it may loosen up after a day at the range. Or, I am just be doing it wrong. Is there a trick to getting the bolt cam pin out of a new rifle? Thanks.

You removed the firing pin first right?
Steps for bolt disassembly:
remove firing pin clip
remove firing pin
rotate bolt cam 90* and pull out
depress extractor aft of the pivot pin
remove extractor pivot pin
ETA: Here is a pdf of the Army M16 field manual: http://tgscom.com/images/sharedimages/PDF/army_m16_manual.pdf
