It's an Izhmash project, the holders of the original and "true" AK patents. Full production on these weapons hasn't started, right now Izshmash really needs a customer. The Russian Defense Forces have many millions more AK74, AKM and AK100 rifles than they have personnel to use them. There are relatively few benefits to the new rifles from the standpoint of a military that is not actively engaged in any major conflicts (they aren't wearing out, destroying or losing rifles in combat).

The project name is "AK200" and it's the 5th generation AK. Probably the most interesting superficial changes are moving the rear sight base to the back of the receiver top cover, covering the upper surface and lower handguard with picatinny rails for optics mounts and other accessories. The rifle makes use of more synthetic materials to reduce weight, with much of the top of the receiver now aluminum. The muzzle brake is a slightly improved version of what was available on the AK100. The controls have been updated (the large dust cover/safety is gone) and are more ambidextrous. The rest you can probably figure out from the diagram. It does have a fairly complex fire control and bolt group installed that allows a very rapid 2 shot burst. The concept of this burst mode is to put two rounds into roughly the same point of impact before the recoil pulse causes the line of the bore to shift. Everything else is more or less a lightly upgraded AK100 rifle in any of the calibers the AK100 line was available in.

The carry handle is mounted that way so it won't get lost when you need to turn your rifle back in. In it's current position you can also use it to gain some elevation when shooting off a barricade.

Oh, they'll make it. Bankruptcy doesn't mean they're going to stop production. But the AK12 will never be widely adopted.
