View Full Version : 1 round per second, Hungarian AKM handguard is hot!

I was shooting 140 rounds of 7.62x39 out of my Hunganrian AKM63 with the steel handguards at 1 round per second per 10 round mag with 30 second intervals in mag changing and sometimes even 5 minute cool downs. The handguard got hot and the gas tube was burning hot, unbearable to hold on as I traditionally grip the gun since I run an Ultimak Gas tube.

Am I shooting too fast? Basically over the course of 1 hour.

You are launching a chunk of steel and lead out of the barrel at 2300+ FPS, and the hot gases are being pushed up into that gas tube. its going to get hot, and going to do it fast. Thats why not many Ak's use metal handguards compared to wood or poly.

25 rounds in 20 minutes out of my 6.5x284 and the barrel is too hot to hold comfortably.

That's the way those things just are.

See if you can install some decent handguards with heat shields...

Stop being such a wuss BucDan. just kidding homie:p

Yeah they get friggin hot dude. And since steel doesn't exactly dissipate heat very well it takes forever to cool down. I learned how to bump my 74 by watching WTSGDYBBR at the zombie shoot. Once I got the hang of it I let rip a whole magazine. Aside from being a completely pointless waste of ammo it got the barrel F**KING HOT in the space of just one mag. I had to just set it down for a while.

yea i saw a youtube vid of that, a guy shooting drum after drum until the wood was in flames. i would think the barrel was toast after that.
