View Full Version : Advice on Les Baer 1911's?

I was over at U.S. Firearms asking about M1A extractors and a couple of Les Baers in the case piqued my interest.

I'm considering picking up a second 1911 for a backup and was wondering if
there were any gotchas or ticks I should know about these pistols?

...stuff like reliability, ammo issues, etc.

BTW, I predict I won't get to comment #3 before someone recommends a
Kymber, Rock Island, or other make. :D

Les Baer makes the finest 1911 you can find for the money.

They're fantastic guns. I broke both of mine in per their recommendation (500 rounds using Federal American Eagle 230gr FMJ) and have never had any issues with them.

I have a premier 11 and it is a wonderful gun. Having said that, need to make sure ammo is reloaded right in order to shoot in this very accurate gun. The tolerances are so tight that ammo not checked can cause problems. Currently using 200 grain ranier over 4 grains of bullseye. What a sweet shooting gun.

Their full sized offerings are great guns. No problems with my TRS.

Thanks for the responses! Looks like I'll be picking one up in the near future.

I saw the American Rifleman episode about his shop and wanted to get some personal recommendations from you guys.

Hello,

Baer, Brown, etc – all top quality and no gotchas.

They are hand-fitted and tested before they leave.

Love my Baer. Picked up this TRS about 6 months ago and is the smoothest shooting 1911 next to a NH Predator (which has a bull barrel and proprietary donut bushing).

Swapped the smooth thin grips for some VZ G10 Double Diamonds and got a custom Kydex holster.

I like the grips on your's, calovesunshine.

Is that supposed to be a 5TH Special Forces emblem on the slide? The chevron's are wrong if it is...

Once you buy from him, you will never buy a Baer or Ed Brown at "store" prices.

It's a Thunder Ranch Special. Clint Smith designed the logo.

Do you remember what Les Baer models U.S. Firearms had in store? I'm a few minutes away from their place. I want to check out a Custom Carry in person :)

They're awesome guns. Even without the 1.5" accuracy package, Les said they'll shoot sub 3" groups at 50 yards. The only tick I have is that a bushing wrench is required for cleaning. Baers give you the best value in a semi-custom 1911 imo. I know a guy on the 1911 forum who has over 100,000 rounds through his TRS so far and the only parts he needed to replace were the recoil spring and extractor.

Do you guys know if he's willing to ship an off-roster one to an FFL for SSE?

I was watching a YouTube video on the ShootingUSA Les Baer profile (how the pistols & rifles are made) and there was probably a good 5 minutes of ShootingUSA covering Les' car collection.

Oh. My. God.

Shooting USA Les Baer Profile Pt. 2 - A little bit of rifles, a lot of rare horsepower (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqUD1Hc8rqA)

Yes. He is very familiar with CA gun laws. He used to be a resident, actually.

He keeps most popular CA FFLs on file for easy shipping.

Crazy John is not shy mentioning the gang banger he smoked and the attempted murder on his wife. He is a true Patriot!

I love my Premier II with 1.5". I was having a problem with the slide locking open after the last round (it wouldn't) and called customer service. A day or two later I got a call, "Hi! This is Les!" he personally diagnosed me and sent me three new Baer mags in exchange for my worn ones.

Sorry, no. My memory isn't that good.

I do remember they had 3 in the case ranging form $1800 to $2400.

The only other thing I remember from looking at them was "pretty shiny thing!". :D

Hammond has better prices the CJ's by about $50.00 (CJ does have gr8 prices though)..he'll ship to FFL for SSE. Only issue is he doesn't always have stock, which means a potential wait.

I got my Les Baer Custom Carry from CJ last year. It runs like a champ. Next, Iím waiting to SSE an Ed Brown Executive Elite from CJ.

Hammond doesnít always have better prices than CJ. But CJ always has the most stock of Browns and Baers.

Hammonds and CJ are both great options, can't go wrong with either (price/service/etc). You're spending > $1500, a few bucks here or there probably isn't going to be a determining factor.

Les Baer makes the finest 1911 you can find for the money.

I'll second this post.

You should be aware that Les Baer's are built very much on the tight side. Expect to use a little muscle when you cycle the action on a new weapon, and when you break it down for cleaning.

Baer also uses a traditional blue finish. It's not as durable as some of the modern whazoo finishes now available. You'll need to keep it dry and oiled.

The Les Baer frame differs slightly from the classic Browning 1911 design. I actually like the shape of Baer's frames a little more, but everyone has their own taste.

I think you'd be very happy with one , or more, of his weapons.

Thanks for the link. I called him yesterday about SSE a Les Baer concept V 6" and he let me know that he does ship them to California, and he also gave me a great deal on one :D.
