View Full Version : Which 1911 to get?

I'm deciding between a Kimber TLE/RL II, a Sig Scorpion 1911 full size, and springfield operator or trp.

Which would you choose, and why?

I've shot the Kimber and am leaning towards it, but I've also heard good things about the scorpion and springfield 1911s.

Let me know what you guys think!

TIA

Your price range is pretty large.

What is the upper portion of your price range? Are you willing to go semi-custom?

Frankly, the customer service and warranty is #1 reason I'd choose a SA.

I was sorta in your position a year ago too so I chose the middle of the ground and picked up a SA Trophy Match. It's very good and consistent. Bad points, it's a day use gun for competing in IPSC/IPDA factory class, checkering is sharpppppppp!

Self Defense, night time use, indoor ranges? Semi to completely poor in that regard.

If you're looking for something to do the former, then it excels, if you're looking for the latter, then you'll want something that might have a rail for a flashlight, or perhaps tritium night sights.

With SA, Sig, and Kimber, you are more than likely to find yourself with a pistol that will work and simply work dependably.

If I were you, I'd go to a gun shop/range locally, hold them and shoot them if they have them in stock or something similar. SAs generally have sharp checkering, so I hope you have rough hands already, Kimber is a little easier holding in that regard and forgiving on your hands. Sigs, though cheaper, offer a pretty nice package with the rail and night sights all in one for ~1200 list.

Oh, and yes, I'm hooked on 1911s now. My next will either be a SA TRP FLR or an SVI.

I think all 3 brands are good from what I've read. I own a Kimber TLE/RL II and its functioned 100% since day 1. My friend and cousin also own a TLE/RL II and theirs also function 100%. My next gun will be the Scorpion and I might get one today actually. I would like to get a SA TRP, but for the price, no way. Either way, I think you'll be happy with any of the 1911's you mentioned.

i have the sig 1911. best gun i have ever shot period. its actually very reasonable in price i paid 840$ from rifle gear. its stock trigger pull is maybe 3.5lbs. (have not measured to be sure) i shot it against a sa and cold gold cup and in my opinion it kick dove tail.
ps. i am not a sig guy i am a glock fan. this 1911 may be changing that

I will likely never buy another new Sig.

I would choose the TRP out of all those, because it's the best made, most expensive option. Springfield customer service is the best. For the same money though, I would also consider a Dan Wesson, if you can stomach the fact that they cost half as much 3 years ago.

I'm a sig fan but SA TRP Operator is just so sexy.

The TRP is Springfield's top of the line production pistol, so the decision would be a no-brainer for me.

Out of your choices, I'd go for a Springfield. They're well known for their excellent customer service and lifetime warranty. I'd personally never buy a Kimber unless it were an older model prior to their Series II stuff. Even then, I would still pick Springfield over Kimber.

You can't really go wrong with any of those choices but I would choose Springfield

All excellent choices. TRP probably has the best reputation/notariaty as it is used by some big name agencies. I would probably lean towards the TRP, but have had good luck with Kimber in the past.

I've got a Sig and absolutely love it. Shoots better than I do, and it's smooth as glass.

SA operator or a Sig 1911.

Sig and Springers are both good to go

Kimbers can be spotty, I'd get an older model if possible

All 3 have MIM parts, if that matters to you

For the price of a TRP Operator you can get a used Les Baer...I got my TRS for cheaper than what TRS Operators are going for nowadays

I have only had (still have) one Kimber. It has been a flawless operator, very accurate, perfect feed, etd. I have owned 3 SIG 1911's, they are the best value in a 1911, period.

I have only had 2 SA 1911's. They both needed a return to the factory for work that had should have been done before they left originally. The good news is SA has the absolute best CS in the industry. You get a pre-paid shipping label when it comes time to send it in and both my guns were back to my door within 2 weeks, you can't beat that care.

I think I would say everything considered, either get the SIG or spend a little more and get either a TRP or Trophy Match SA (depending on whether you want tactical or target style sights), I think you wil be happy with either of those choices.

Good luck.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Right now I guess I'll have to see what I can find in stock at places. Kinda leaning towards a sig scorpion because I found one in stock, but I plan on checking out the local springfield dealer tomorrow to see what they have to offer too.

Anyone know anywhere that has the 1911's I mentioned in stock in the Bay Area?

Between the Kimber and springfields you mentioned, I've personally only had the kimbers malfunction. FTE and FTF - different mags, ammo, and shooters as well. This was after both were sent back for repair already. Happened several years ago though but might be a fluke, just saying. Good luck with your choice!

I don't know if it's just me sucking at the googles, but it seems like a pain to find holsters for the railed 1911's. I have a Sig 1911 Tac that I love, but I want a SA TRP next to take advantage of the different standard 1911 holsters out there.

cwin

I use a standard cqc Serpa holster for my railed 1911s. If you end up with a full rail trp then blade tech makes a holster for it.

I'm partial to Springers. They're true to the original 1911 design. Kimber has the firing pin safety and I'm not crazy about Sig's external extractor. I have both the SA TRP Operator and Kimber Statinless TLE/RL II. I shoot better with the SA and I've never shot the Sig. So my preference is for the original design. So does Les Baer, Wilson Combat, and Springfield Professional :)

Ever consider Dan Wesson?

There are only 2 listed for sale in CA. but the rest of the catalog can be had SSE.

I went to Tracy Rifle and pistol and they had a few off list Sig 1911's in stock ! Might want to check them out as well.

True. Price increase for the Classic and PM7 are steep. Or you can get a Stainless Steel Specialist for right around the same money you would spend on a TRP. I just got one for 1434.00 shipped:D I still have to pay for SSE then DROS when it get's to my FFL. I think they won't last long at that price. Check it out http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=363890

Rob at CZ Custom will be happy to help you, they had one left 2 days ago.
