View Full Version : Colt 6940CA vs Daniel Defense M4V1

04-23-2012, 7:06 PM
Ok I am looking for a good quality AR. What would you guys suggest? My friends have all recommended either the Colt 6940CA or the Daniel Defense M4V1. One person suggested an AR through Red Jacket Firearms. What advice can you give me? New to the AR arena. Thanks!! SEAN

Sure! Smith & Wesson's M&P15 line. I had one a while back, and I plan on getting it again. I had the Sport which ran about $700. I was VERY impressed with the quality at that price. The sport doesnt have a forward assist or dust cover, but that is very minor stuff. DD is good, and so is Spikes. You really cant go wrong with any brand you choose. I own a Colt 6940 right now.

How do you like the 6940?

04-23-2012, 7:43 PM
Colt, LWRC, LMT, Noveske, BCM, Stag, DD...thats what you'll hear for "high quality".. but u seem more interested in Colt than others who ask this. Definitely not turning down a Colt... oh haha, and id stay away from red jacket... i mean why go there....will probably take FOREVER to get your rifle and im sure they are quiite expensive for what they are...

I have been doing my research online and have heard some bad things about red jacket. Taking forever. I am leaning towards the Daniel Defense M4 V1 in all honesty. Held one in a gun shop last year and was like wow!

I'd get the Colt. Not because it's any better than the others, but because it's a Colt. Lots of AR's have come and gone over the years, but Colt remains the standard. It will absolutely hold it's value better than all the others, IMO.

In the AR world there are many different camps... I say get whatever you like best and what your budget allows. I assembled my own and couldn't be happier.

I have thought about getting an upper and assembling my own, but have never put together a lower. Not the best at some of that stuff.

You could always get the Colt 6920 and put on an Omega X FSP that comes on the V1 or you could put on a DD Lite FSP or a DD RIS II FSP on it.

That's the route I went because I would toss the stock and rear sight anyways on the V1. I went with the Lite rail because apparently its a stronger rail system than the Omega X from what I've read.

What about the Daniel Defense M4 V5 flat top? I have thought about that in case I ever wanted to throw on an optic.

This. Don't be swayed from your decision between Colt and DD. They're both top of the tops.

And smack whoever recommended something from Red Jacket.

Partial to Colt, currently own a Colt M4, and have owned other Colts, including Colts Law Enforcement M4 / Carbine. Great rifles, but honestly, at the end of the day, go with whatever rollmark you like best because aside from slight differences in aesthetics, there's not going to be much difference between Colt, Daniel Defense, Noveske, etc.

Wait, did you really say Red Jacket?

I own a colt 6940 and I love it =)

Get a Colt... can't go wrong with either

04-23-2012, 10:07 PM
choose Noobiski and get it over with :D

You can't go wrong with a name brand that others have mentioned. (Red Jacket doesn't count).
Decide what features you want, handle the different models if possible, and make an educated choice.
A comment made about a Colt holding its value is fair enough. Brands will come and go, but everybody will always recognize a Colt.
I haven't fondled the others, but personally I like the 6940 line very very much. One piece upper and rail, solid no BS flip up sight. The only bit on this one, is that since the barrel and nut is special to the 6940, you aren't going to be swapping barrels without sending it out, and you are in the non-AR standard parts area now.

Colt! :D

Thanks for the advice. You guys are great!!

Colt has a true monolithic and free floated barrel. When you consider the price of an aftermarket rail and back up sights, the 6940 is a bargain. Some people might not like the shorter carbine length rail system, but I've been able to fit a weapon light, laser and whatever else I needed to (ie grenade launcher sights, grenade launcher) on my issue weapon with no problems. I'd vote for the 6940, I had one but sold it as I was torn between it and cloning my issue weapon for training - the training value ended up winning out so I sold the 6940 upper to a member here.

My opinion is go Colt..

04-24-2012, 2:45 PM
Qualitywise they are too close to call. If I were you, I'd consider mid-length vs. carbine, resale value, availability, and if having "Colt" on the side is important. I wouldn't worry about any price difference because both of these rifles will last you a lifetime and you may very well end up owning both anyway.

I love my Colt, but like everyone else said-any name brand is good. Try a few on for size, and take your pick. The 6920 is also a nice model.

04-24-2012, 3:37 PM
DD makes a great rifle, but considering both are probably at the same price point, the Colt is a no-brainer, imo.

Have a DDM4...Shot it against my co-workers LWRC AR and Trijicon scope...Groups...I won. Though the LWRC is nice...Its performance is not worth that price difference.

I would get the Colt only because I have a DD...However, owning a Colt (I have a COlt 1911 XSE) is pretty cool to say the least. The DD will be cheaper vs the Colt depending on model.

I am interested in getting a Colt AR but an M700 is in my future.
