View Full Version : Budget "SPR" Inspired Build (for now)... What do you think?

I'm definitely not new to the AR but this will be my first time building one. As the title says this is a "SPR" inspired budget build "for now". The reason i say that is I will eventually, as time passes, upgrade to better quality parts. Almost $1000 in the end but from what i have read and researched that is pretty low for an SPR type build.

What I have...

1. LAR OPS-4 Ambidextrous Upper $300
2. Olympic Arms FIRSH Free FLoat Quad Rail w/ Magpul AFG and GG&G Bipod mount $125
3. DPMS Mini SASS 18" 1/8 twist 5.56 w/ PRI Low Profile gas block and tube $200
4. New Frontier LW15 Polymer Lower $135
5. Rainier Arms XTC $60
6. Magpul MBUS Front and Rear $50

I'm planning on putting a scope on this rig for a little range fun/varmint control on my grandpas land. Looking at Optisan Mamba w/ PEPR-style mount from SWFA. I won't be shooting out past 150, it has great reviews, has a nice look to it, and its inexpensive. $160 (including shipping) from SWFA

Why the New Frontier polymer lower?

Aluminum is tried and true. I've been considering the idea of composite lowers but I decided to wait a few years to see them improve and see the community thoroughly embrace these.

Polymer purely because of budget. It comes complete with LPK, stock tube, and 6-position stock all for $100 not including DROS/tax. A stripped aluminum lower alone is around $100 not including DROS/tax. Now that right there is bang for your buck. Do a youtube search also of the lower. There's a few Torture test videos which are plenty impressive.

how'd you get a set of mbus for $50?

oh and nice build! I have the LW-15 lower too and it's great for the value. perfect for a budget or lightweight build

Aside from that lower being polymer I dont see the need to upgrade many of your other parts.Just because you didnt spend a ton of cash doesnt mean it isnt good. Id be happy with what you have and just shoot the crap out of it.

yeah i feel the same way about it now that it's all built up and i can finally see how it looks/feel it out... plus i just bought a motorcycle and need to regain those funds :)

only things that i MIGHT upgrade are stock and trigger. but not any time soon.

Does the polymer lower take drop in match trigger?

SPR? Special Price Rifle?

sotastyy

@duc748bip: newfrontier sight says the lower takes any lpk so it should take a match trigger

@Ryan in SD: SPR INSPIRED. this in almost no way fits the SPR criteria. a legit SPR would be waayy too much to $$$ for me

If you don't mind me asking, why the Ops 4 if you built it on a budget? That receiver is pretty expensive.

Cause it's B.A! I love the looks and feel of the side charging handle. Plus if you add up all the $$ or stripped upper, bcd, ch, etc it comes within $50 or so of the OPS-4 so what the heck.

If you all look closely, you can see straight through a hole that should be filled... Any more guesses?

$79 for a PSA lower on sale locally and a del-ton lower part kit for $55+
Still come close to the price of a Frontier polymer lower.

duc748: The $79 PSA sale starting tomorrow at Turners? Cool. Does the del-ton lpk you mention incl buffer, buffer tube, the spring and a stock as well?

OP, looks nice. Congrats. Did you do any prep (sanding, cleaning, etc) on the LW-15 before painting??

I like it. Very cool build and I'm not an AR guy buy any means.

Really like the side charger. I'll have to look for a upper that uses that when I finally build one.

Been real happy with my 18" sass barrel. Very accurate. IIRC I've got about $1500 in mine including the optics.

no sanding since it's a polymer in its raw form. just thoroughly degreased and used adhesion promoter. i did disassemble and tape off the inside as to not interfere with tolerances/space.

ooh very nice! i like! i plan on upgrading optics further down the road but for now they're perfectly fine. what optic is that?

Very nice build. I love this upper. This will be on my next AR build. Congrats on the build looks great and for a great price. Now lets see some groups :D

So just a spur of the moment thing happened today. I had about 1hr before work so i said what the heck, lets shoot the new build so i took a little trip to Field Time Range (luckily its down the street) to test it out with the irons...

Conclusion:
0 FTE/FTF (Field Time reloads & Winchester)
Super smooth mechanics
Really low recoil

Here's a couple pictures of some groups. Before anyone says anything, I have to admit that i was extremely uncomfortable shooting. I forgot my own eyes and ears so I had to use Field Time's big bulky muffs and eyes which didn't let me get proper head positioning/eye relief on the rifle.. PLUS the MBUS' were horrible! after every few shots the rear sight aperture thing would go down a little bit.

i shot more groups where i was able to stack some holes but there were also a bunch of flyers. The gun nonetheless is very accurate.

**TRUE (sorta) groups are to come when i go to burro on the 14th and get to use the rifle with a scope.

This thread inspiring me. I ordered one of the bravo "blem" uppers. Already have a bcg ch and optics. Hunting around for rifle length rails. So the SSAS barrel is an option. Any other recommendations? I too will probably either use an existing lower and trade off or an extra lw15

Aluminum is tried and true. I've been considering the idea of composite lowers but I decided to wait a few years to see them improve and see the community thoroughly embrace these.

Polymer is also tried and true in millions of firearms around the world. The lower has zero force other than the hammer. I don't understand why people are so afraid of it. I shot about 600 rounds through one last week and it was enough to make me want to go buy one. Should have dove in when it was $99.
