View Full Version : My Very First Gun: Daniel Defense M4V5

Hey guys, I'm new here and I just picked up my very first firearm.

After weeks of research or bargain hunting, I settled on a Daniel Defense M4V5 and scored a good used deal on here. My choices were 1. HK416 2. LWRC M6 3. Knights Armament SR15 4. Daniel Defense M4V5.

I settled for the DD because quality is top notch and it is way cheaper than the aforementioned choices. Fitment between the lower and upper is tight with no play.

Thanks guys!!! They are just fantasy choices as most of them are way out of my budget and my ability, skill, and knowledge.

Down the road what would be a good upgrade to the rifle??? I was thinking maybe a Gisselle trigger (if I stumble upon a good deal), Magpul MIAD grip, Daniel Defense or Magpul sights, and maybe an Eotech. Any advice guys?

Nice settlement. More money (you'll need it) for ammunition.

Looking at the rifle, the obvious choice is sights. Daniel Defense fixed set MSRP for $120 and would be a great choice. The Troy fixed set MSRP for $120 also. I've got the Troy flip-ups which are nice but MSRP for $220. I'd personally stay away from the Magpuls (plastic).

OUTSTANDING choice!!!

Sadly, MOST go the FUDD route, with a Stag, DPMS, Oly , RRA. or... 'mystery brand,' but you have chosen WISELY grasshoppa!

Now go blow excessive amounts of ammo through it!!! ;)

nice choices...good decision. i'm assuming price came into play, considering the price of the hk and lwrc and kac vs the dd?;) di is a good pick 1st time around, though those are helluva choices you had there. good taste. get good sights, ammo a red dot or scope depending on your use. enjoy.

Sights and ammo already mentioned. Recommend start with and learn irons.

Not so much an upgrade to the rifle: Get some training. A local Tac Carbine type of course seems to help many if one is interested in this type of shooting. Many great training options in SoCal, check out the training section here on CG.

Maybe a couple extra mags?

Have fun, be safe, enjoy. :)

Congrats and welcome to the world of gun ownership. Get some iron sights, DD makes very good fixed sights. As for optics, idk your budget... But Eotech, Trijicon and aimpoint will all serve you well.

Screw the "upgrades". Go learn how to use the rifle to see what you actually need/don't need--especially if it's your first gun.

Congatz on your DDM4V5. Nice gun though. Have you considered GPUs?

I used to love DIs until I had known the ease and convenience of cleaning GPs, or lack of need of cleaning, that is.

Outstanding choice!
+1 on Troy folding BUIS. They lock up tight! and frees up the landscape for optics. I went through carry handle, Magpul MBUS, DD fixed, and now use Troys except an ARMS #41 on one rifle for a traditional look.
Also, I like straighter grips from BCM and HK. The ergos just work better for me.

In addition to sights and/or optic, I'd look into replacing the stock. The stock it comes with is light for that rifle, IMO. I prefer Vltor, either the imod or emod. I have a BCM with the 12" lite rail and went with an emod.

Very nice first rifle. You will definately want some sights and a sling. I'd hold off on triggers and such until you've shot a few thousand rounds. Iron sights are important in my book. LMT makes a really nice A2 cut down carry handle style, tht can be run simultaneously with a cowitnessed red dot in the future.
Take care, have fun, look into an Appleseed event.

Don't forget a good lube and grease on the bolt prior to use. I had a minor bolt sticking issue on my DDM4 V4 when I did not oil the bolt enough.

Since that one occurance, I re-lubed with EWT grease and Slip2000 it cycles perfectly no issues.

Good luck . . . Iron sights first as others have said.

good choice for your first gun and great selection with the HK, LWRCi and KAC--they're all top tier rifles with their fans and critics. I'm biased toward LWRCi since I have an M6A3. As far as your top 3 choices, I'd recommend LWRCi; read the literature on how they manufacture their rifles, everything is top notch. I almost went the HK route but didn't feel comfortable with a non-lined barrel and their take down pins (in a SHTF or WROL scenario--eg, Katrina--I wanted something that was durable, reliable and accurate).

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your DD.

DD Great choice!

Bought a Bushy patrol rifle (RAW) three years ago as it was the only thing in stock. Sold off all the junk parts except for the stripped lower and built it up with a better lower parts kit, rifle gear DD barreled upper & BCG, mil-spec receiver extension, Troy rear, & Magpul stocks and grip. The RG / DD upper is perfect!

Love the rifle, its beautifully made! However mine has 5.56 and DDM4v5 printed on the side. I guess this is something done on all new (2012) models maybe?

NICE build thread. I'd opt for some folding sights like basic magpuls or maybe get a riser for the eotech. That way you get a nicer sight picture.

Vtac padded slings are always nice and comfortable to carry. But you'll need to buy the QD swivels. With the magpul ms3, you'll need to also buy the magpul end plate.

:D Nice to see a SoCal Club Lexus member on here. It's always interesting to see guys that have the same damn expensive hobbies. Modding cars, modding guns, and then using a fancy SLR to take pictures of it all.

I ordered my first AR yesterday as well and it happened to be a Daniel Defense DDM4v3. Now the wait begins...I actually ordered the Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport, but after thinking about all the stuff I wanted to do with it...I ended up going back a week later and exchanging it to order the Daniel Defense.

Now all you need is an IR laser and a kitchen sink :D

Personally I don't see the need for the bi pod or magwell holder. It's added weight with limited function your magazine can act as a point of contact when your prone atleast the bi pod is a quick detach.

Take a carbine class and see what you could take off the rifle nice pictures BTW.
