View Full Version : Holy crap, PSG-1s are expensive.

Just dropped $1,200 on a forearm, trunnion, and match barrel. :O If anyone knows a less expensive source for a correct stock and trigger group, please let me know. I'm stoked for this build, I've never done a G3 before :)

Yup, gotta complete the MGS collection----slowly but expensively :p

I really hate having such expensive taste. I sort of miss the days when I was fascinated with .22s lol.

What receiver or what are you building it on?

I'm debating between a flat and a PTR receiver. I'm not really sure yet. The receiver will be my last purchase since its the most common part to find.

One guy just posted a trigger group with grip on HKPRo for $700- but I think it's sold.

Expect to pay $800-900 for the trigger unit, and around $700-800 for the butt stock.

In reality, you're better off buying a Nill wood grip, and a Williams set trigger. The PSG trigger isn't all it's cracked up to be. 3-4lbs, with some creep before the release. My AR-10 2 stage match trigger blows it out of the water. Add a trigger shoe later to complete the look.

If it's not a 100% correct PSG you're building, I woudl cheat and opt for the nicer/cheaper trigger. I'd also go for a picatinny top rail to get more modern scope mounting options.

That's a very expensive clone... makes me wonder if it's worth the time and effort. Maybe your better off with an HK SR9, there's one in the WTS section.
Just my $0.02.

I'm going for a genuine PSG-1 build. I want it correct as possible.

I'm only doing two things differently. I'll be using a standard HK91 bolt group. The only difference between the two is the exposed extractor that requires a special groove cut into the barrel (Think of a mauser barrel).

The PSG-1 bolt group is simply too rare, expensive, and offers no accuracy benefit over a regular one. Also, I'll be using a picatinny rail on mine so I can use a Nightforce scope. The Hensoldt PSG-1 scopes are too expensive and won't suit my long range needs. I fully intend to use this rifle at Sac Valley's 1K range, which is way beyond the capability of the Hensoldt Optic.

Other than those differences, I'm goin legit ;)

I'm now sunk $2400 total. Just got a latest gen new complete walnut trigger group ;)

Yeah, the classic Hensoldts they were issued with were designed for engagements inside of 200m. They're great rifles, best in class up until the mid-90s, but now seriously outdated. It wasn't just a modified G3 - much of the cost came from the low rates of acceptable parts during manufacturing. Back in '93 I got to see the process in Oberndorf and it was crazy how they would scrap 90% of receivers and other parts because the metalurgy wasn't consistent.

You'll be lucky to get it done for less than $5K if you are going for correctness and that will be with a lot of luck in finding all the parts below typical retail. Keep in mind an HK PSG-1 will set you back closer to $12K and the MSG90 roughly $10K.

The barrel alone is usually over $1k, the trunnion $250-300 and the forearm will generally be in the $150-200 range. From that standpoint, you are doing pretty well.

Good luck,

This is the poor man's version, built with Cetme internals from scratch:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/Holescreek/Gunstuff/HSG-1/HSG1Finished091111007.jpg

I'm only doing two things differently. I'll be using a standard HK91 bolt group. The only difference between the two is the exposed extractor that requires a special groove cut into the barrel (Think of a mauser barrel).

Actually, the PSG1 BCG is completely different, using half-rollers and a titanium locking piece. Ejector not withstanding, the trigger pack is different as well. There are a number of sites to download the PSG1 operator manual for a sectional look at the internals.

Using a stock 91 bolt group poses only one special challenge, you'll need a 40 degree locking piece for the 25" barrel. If you can't machine your own parts and want to dress it up like a PSG1 you're going to need a >$400 forward assist and >$200 stiffening rails too.

As was pointed out previously, it's going to be PSG1-"ish" no matter how much money you toss at it so it might as well be comfortable. I have a twenty-something page build thread on mine on weaponsguild, since you are going to end up with the same thing in the end (except for plastic furniture)you might find parts of it interesting, if just for a chuckle.

Interesting. I leads one to ask what makes a PSG1 a "PSG1"? The only dedicated components are the BCG and ejector. If the OP is using an HK91 BCG and ejector it would seem to make it a long barrelled HK91. Kinda like putting a good barrel on a PTR.

Nice project. I thought about building one and gave up when I found out that the PSG1 hand guard was $200 alone and required special fitting. Ended up with a SR9 instead and picked up the PSG1 stuff 15 years ago at R&J Guns in Carson (it was $$$ back then too). Great stock & trigger when it was first intro'd but there are cheaper options now and the SR9 barely keeps up with a well built/equipped AR-10. Kinda like how a Porsche 930 was king when it first came out but now is more of a "nostalgic" ride. I heard there's was a "demilled" PSG1 kit out there that was a PD return, but I think it was a myth or the one in 80% condition for $7500 that had no optics (!!!!).

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g356/flea70/SR9TC.jpg

Went a slightly different route when I had Carlos at Beltfed Prec. build an HK11 clone for me. I decided to add the flat top, rails and forward assist to it just to satisfy my PSGI/MSG inner child...

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g356/flea70/bpp11sideraw.jpg

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g356/flea70/HKFam2.jpg

If possible, try to get an FMP or SAR 8 for your project. I like the PTR's but the mag area tends to be "tight". No probs when using surplus mags but enough of an issue that X-91 mags will not interchange without some minor fitting. Good luck on the build! Please post pics on its progress...

I'm building from the receiver up and not starting with an existing rifle. I'm considering building a flat because then I can engrave it as PSG1A1-TARGET, which is not banned. I figure, I'm spending an arm and a leg on a collector's item, I might as well make it legit.

To avoid issues with names, you might be better off with "PSG1A2" or even "PSG-2" to further distance yourself from the banned item. The safest would probably be nothing at all.

Any comments on the Holescreek "Proto PSG1" CETME? If you look through the build thread you'll see just how involved that build was, from designing and fabricating the stocks through using modified AR15 forward assist internals on the "silent bolt closure device" (using HK's terminology). From one to ten, I'd rank it as an easy ten!

You will never recover the cost of the build...If you try to sell it after, expect about 50-65 cents on the dollar for what it cost you.

I remember back in the days when you could buy PSG-1 for 4k (70's- early 80's ). Then towards the ban they went up to 10k..I saw one a few years ago when I lived in AZ and I'm thinking it sold for 15-17k..not sure...for that kind of $$$ I would rather have a MP5, MP5SD or a G3 ( being in Ka now, its a moot thought )

You have to be a true HK freak to want and build one...They aren't as accurate as one would think but it was great for a semi auto, multi shot type tactical / sniper weapon in its day.

My RAW 91 has the PSG trigger group which is nice..maybe someday I'll but the rear stock or go the magpul route

Good luck on your build...Adam Weber is going to have the best selection of parts,,,maybe Gordon Miller or Robert Johnson of RTG Intl

You are right, but you assume I plan to sell it. I'm building this because I want one. Obviously, I want one enough to front the cost for it.

They are eye catching rifles, and it will most definitely get a lot of attention. :) Might be dated technology, but everyone at Sac Valley will drool on it.

I've always chosen rifles and handguns that are uncommon. I like taking the path less travelled. This is probably why I go for my AKS-74U over my AKM, and why I bought an FN SPR over a Rem 700 when I started getting into precision sticks.

I had a buddy who owned a factory PSG-1. He flew back to Utah to do some shooting and put it in a new Pelican case. Well, that was before the Pelican cases had vents, and he flew back to California after sealing it in Utah, and the higher elevation packing caused it to suck down tight when he landed in California.

He didn't want to drill into a crazy expensive case, so he called Pelican, and they sent out some retrofit screw down vent plugs. They eventually started making their cases to accommodate changes in atmospheric pressure.

It was one crazy cool rifle though...

I second Sturm and Centermass, HKParts is indeed quite expensive and most of what is sold there can be had elsewhere for less. What Adam has going is that he covers far more models than everyone else in one place. Convenience has a price. RobertRtg are my go-to for most parts and they have some nice stuff they have added that is unique. Scorpion Arms sometimes gets some good stuff, particularly so for CETME but also for PTR. Add to the list some of the "small parts" and odds and ends from Keepshooting, buymilsurp, sportsmansguide. Apex, Numrichs and sometimes Sarco have a good selection as well.

Even when properly folded, it should still get a pass through the press with a straightening mandrel. Don't have a straightening mandrel? You can rent them, just not on this site. Head to Militaryfirearm or Weaponsguild for that. If you are in SoCal, you can attend the Build Party in June over at Roccobro's place, he has one that Holescreek fabricated and is the type most folks have bought to rent out. Unlike some of the rental units that have seen their share of abuse, the one Roccobro has is pristine. It hasn't even needed another coat of anti-gall stick wax yet.
