I see atleast another 17k before I have to rear it down and switch barrels. Glad I have 2 virgin bulgarian barrels sitting here lol.
As for collapsible stock. You answered own question, but theres also the fact that when im standing and shooting I collase the stock all the was in so as to bunch the rifle up inti me. And when i'm prone I prefer to extend the stock out more.
And thanks everyone for the positive remarks even the AR people were nice lol.
As for the REPR....
How long have you had it? How much did it cost? Hiw many rounds do you have thru it? I'm betting practicing with that bad boy gets expensive! I have 2 saiga 308's so i'll stick with those, until I get a socom or m1a scout

This one is much more fun than any of the many other ak's I own.
I can stay on target easier while moving thanks to the aimpoint, I can bunch up clloser with the rifle thanks to the viltor, ohh and my hand sits better after prolonged shooting with the pistol grip. I cant remember the last time I sat on a bench and shot but heck even that would be fun with this rifle lol.

Does the collapsable stock eat any recoil ? Just curious...

Dr Rockso
04-19-2012, 6:23 PM
Looks nice. For optics I run a CompM4 in a RS Regulate mount, which is a real slick setup that gets your red dot nice and low so you can cowitness with the standard AK sights. If you've got a side rail I'd highly recommend it.

NorCalK9.com
04-19-2012, 6:23 PM
This rifle already has minimal recoil, I cant tell the difference between before or now.

NorCalK9.com
04-19-2012, 6:27 PM
Side rail ads unnecessary weight, i've used them and still use them on 5 of my other AK patterns but I dont like the akwardness of it. The tws is a GREAT ad on, if I could afford to buy 17 more all my ak's would have them!

Niiiiice! My 5.45 Saiga conversion is about 90% done. I just need to get the grip wrap and install a bullet guide. I can't wait to start running the cheap steel cased Russian 5.45 through it.

Nice setup. Yeah, definitely get that aimpoint lower. Not sure you can get it low enough to cowitness with that aimpoint mount. I believe that one only goes lower 1/3 or absolute cowitness on the AR, so it'll still sit too high on the AK.

edit: This will work nicely: http://www.nightvisionplanet.com/aimpoint-30mm-ring-srw-l-low-wide-ring-weaver.html

6.8 is a great round, I was going to do a 6.5 but opted for the latter cause the component are redly available.

NorCalK9.com
04-19-2012, 11:16 PM
@ruiner
I'm not worried about cowitness, if it ever fails theres a quick release and I can fall back on irons.
As for the 6.5 6.8 thing i'm prob gonna wait, I bought a 458socom before, rushed into it shot 40 rounds and sold it too my friend due to the ammo being so darn expensive! That stuff makes 308 as cost effective as .22 lol.
+ I heard saiga is suppose to release some more calibers.

Texas weapon systems gen2 dustcover

I take exception to your characterization of the Texas Weapon Systems Dog Leg 2 as a mere "dust cover" - That's a Dog Leg 2 you're talking about!

It is about as well engineered a rail as I've ever seen, even if it's a bit pricey and a little inconvenient to have to replace the recoil spring guide with the one included. The only other system that is as well engineered (and has similar requirements around recoil guide rod replacement) is designed around an excellent A2 style adjustable aperture sight, the Tech-Sights AK100/AK200 system. I have those on two Yugo M70s. One of my Bulgy AK74s have a similar configuration to yours.

I have 17,000 yes thousand rounds thru this bad boy, never a single malfunction "except for the bolt getting hung up on the tws dust cover in the beginning lol"

A dremel will efficiently relieve any metal from the charging handle that is close to touching the top cover. The design of the cover extends further down, so there is always a chance of that.

For those that are torn between an ak an ar go this route. I dont use safety so I dont personally need to switch that out.

If you want an AR15, nothing else will likely do. I consider it good practice to make all weapons as ambidextrous as possible. You should consider one of these: http://www.sniperhandle.com/p1.html. The AK selector is fairly easy to manipulate if you are right handed (not so much the charging handle), though if you are left handed it is a bit of a pain to manipulate the switch. With this change to the selector switch the AK is already very left-hand friendly and for a right handed person, the sniperhandle unit allows thumb-switch operation.

I have it on two rifles already, worth it. I had to modify for the 1.5mm receivers, but that was easier than designing and fabricating my own. The configuration is similar to the modern AK variants, such as the Polish Beryl, the Finnish Valmet, Israeli Galil and South African R4.

You should've saved your mp-15 sport and throw one bore snake run though, and clp the side of the bolt, every 1000 rounds. And have a contest with the AR and the AK to like 15k each

Then see which one has some sort of malfunction first.

Here is one of my favorite AK's I'm not bringing with me to CA. A Rifle Dynamics build of a Romy G.

But I like other guns too. My guns I'm bringing to CA with me, since modified with legal muzzle brakes.

@e36mike
You need to get some 74!
These fan boys can make all the claims on their rifles they want, but 1 claim they cant make is base rifle $600-$700 and ammo at 11 apiece! That makes fir alot of fun shooting and doesnt blow your bank account apart!
I just heard from redline 223pmc $369 1k before tax. Ouch!

A ptr91 has been on my list for a year bow, I just cant justify the price of ammo and I already have 2 saiga 308's. But I do want a ptr I just need to get into reloading orvsomething

NorcalK9 would be out of luck shooting 5.45x39 here in Socal at our ranges.

This is the main thing thats stopping me from shooting Russian guns in general.

There are somewhat more expensive copper jacketed steel cased ammo that are just fine with any range in the region. Not all 5.45x39 is steel.

A SIG 556, Daewoo DR200, CIS SAR 80 or an Armalite 180B will give you all the 5.56 NATO compatibility you could want if you get bored with your AK74/AK100 in the same caliber and never have to suffer the doldrums of AR15 ownership.

Not really.
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=562690

That depends on what you are willing to accept in terms of price. I counted some 18 choices that are free of steel in their jackets in 7.62x39 and about 2 for 5.45x39. Handloaders will have more options, particularly if they resize more common .224 bullets. Compared to cheap steel cased, steel jacketed Soviet milsurp, everything except Yugo M67 is going to be a lot more expensive. However, if your average range visit results in 200 or fewer rounds being expended and you do that just a few times a year with your rifle, then the cost of ammo won't be exorbitant.

Haha ya I love my ak47 so my next ak plat will be a 74 for sure. Your thread title just makes ar people fuss. I shot some ars and while I like the platform and how they shoot I just love the ak, the cheap ammo, the simplicity, the sound/feel of the action etc.

Wow! I'm really digging that! The safety selector is my least favorite part of the AK platform and that seems like it would totally correct the issue.

I don't consider it an issue per se, but the switch fits my ideals better. The big, impossible to miss selector swinging on the right side is just a bit slower to operate. Military organizations that train their troops with the AK often teach a "finger off the trigger, safety off, muzzle lowered" discipline, whereas countries using other weapons, or modern AK variants with thumb switch/ambidextrous selectors are taught to keep the safety on until the moment of contact. With this switch you can do the same and it's easy enough to use with index finger or thumb for both lefties and righties that it's a good addition to AKs you shoot a lot.

somebody who might want to shoot their rifle from places other than a bench, and perhaps may be carrying it further than from the trunk of their car to said bench?

I heard SOCOM likes em too actually :p

not personal at all! I actually almost bought the REPR instead of the SCAR! might still get one at some point. Enough of the thread jack though..

I just enjoy the competitive ribbing that comes with ownership of certain items, as displayed here with the AK!

That's why you get the 18" Repr:43: long enough to shoot long distance but it's not as bulky as the 20":43:

I was a kid.. built that in the garage with a vise and a hammer...good times. It still shoots fine after 1k+ rounds.. like i said before, I hate the ak mag lock so I never shoot it any more. I dont like the MMG on it because its very uncomfortable.

Im going to take it apart and redo the rails when I get a welder.

Most of what folks buy are AKMs/AKSs or variants on these. The older AK47 was the pattern from which the Chinese Type 56/MAK 90 and Yugo M63-M70 models originated, but differ to suit local preferences and as a result are neither AKM nor AK47 in the details. The ubiquitous WASR and Romy G are examples of AKM clones. Milled AK47 clones are rare because of the higher cost of production.

"All rifles based on the Kalashnikov design are frequently referred to as AK-47s in the West, although this is only correct when applied to rifles based on the original three receiver types.[25] In most former Eastern Bloc countries, the weapon is known simply as the "Kalashnikov" or "AK"."
