Hi,

I've got a Stevens 200 coming to me in 30-06, and I've just picked up my first single stage reloader. I already have 8mm mauser dies, and was curious if anyone makes a savage barrel in 8mm mauser.

Thanks for your time.

Gary

Pacnor and Shilen both make prefit Savage barrels in 8 mm Mauser but it would be cheaper to buy a new set of 30.06 dies.

Anything the 8x57mm can do that the 30-06 can do better. 30-06 dies are cheap and plentiful.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to be buying a new barrel regardless, so just getting the new dies would add to the cost. It's something to consider if I don't get a new barrel though.

I have other rifles in 8mm that I want to reload for(old mausers in great shape), so it would just simplify things. Not to spark a caliber war here, are you saying 30-06 has better ballistic performance than 8mm?

The 30.06 will get about 100 fps over the 8x57 with most bullets until you get to the 220 grain bullets and then they will be just about even. Which in the real world doesn't mean squat, no animal will know the difference. The 30.06 bullets will have a better ballistic coefficient because they will be longer than the 8mm bullets for the same weight but again it's not that important until you are shooting past 600 yards or so.

Interesting. I may just hold out on the 8mm barrel then. Thanks for that.

Just out of curiosity, are these comparisons of 30-06 against American loaded 8mm or Euro loaded 8mm?

You know good 30-06 dies can be found for $50 or less right.

I know, but it's not just dies. I'm already in the process of getting 8mm loaded, brass, bullets, etc. It'd just make my life easier is all, as an aftermarket barrel for me is pretty much a sure thing.
