This rifle is a beast! I took it out to Hodge rd and was blasting bowling pins and beer cans all day. For those who knock the rifle for being too heavy or too loud probably never fired the gun. I admit its a little heavy when shouldering it, but once it locked and loaded and your blasting away targets its not noticeable at all. Feeding the beast wasn't bad either, I picked up Tula ammo for $9 bucks a box and no FTF's. Its now officially my favorite rifle....oh and no BB:)

Nice rifle! Gotta love that it's CA ready to go out of the box with no BB. I am going to be getting my Socom 16 today here in Georgia. But don't know when I can shoot it.

There is something to be said for a little weight in a .308 :) I love mine, nothing short of fantastic.

gah! dream rifle! $9 a box?!?!? This may have just helped me make my way towards this rifle... i hope .308 ammo prices dont rise

weber_2
04-18-2012, 9:19 PM
^Yup. On may way to Hodge Rd I stopped at the Walmart on Foothill and they had 308 Tula for $9. They also had 762x39 for $5. Its steel cored so its a no go at ranges but perfect for desert shooting. Actually cheaper for me to shoot the Socom then my AR. I don't put steel cored ammo thru my AR too dirty for a gas impingent.

Be careful with steel case ammo. It popped my extractor on my scout

Is the gun just dirty? I'm picking up my first ar next week and was planning on running Tula from Wally world.

Steel cased/cored ammo is usually dirtier that the brass stuff. Its just a personal preference of mine of not putting it in my AR. I run it thru my AK and now M1A and its fine.

I've been dithering on that rifle now for about 5 years. Want it with the rails, but everyone says the rails make it too heavy. Why doesn't someone (Magpul?) get smart and make lightweight rails for it?

Knife Edge
04-21-2012, 12:07 AM
The rail weight is negligible when grabbing the end vs supporting via forward of the magwell. I've run day long courses with mine, zero issues with weight, in fact it nearly zeros the muzzle rise. Great gun.

The whole "its too heavy" thing is a complaint from non-owners. When your shouldering it at the gun shop and comparing it to smaller caliber weapons its a bit heavy. But once your shooting the rifle you don't feel that extra weight. Plus its a 7.62x51 NATO round of course its gonna be heavier then an AR. Dont believe any CONs about this rifle its nothing but Haterade. If your thinking about getting this rifle DO IT NOW cuz the price keeps going higher and higher.

I have had mine in Urban Camo for a couple years now.
Every issue I have had has been my fault.
FTE, bad reloads and improper maintenance.
Heavy? I agree, once shouldered and fired you don't seem to notice, it feels right.
More pleasant to shoot than the AR-10, less felt recoil and quicker time back on Target.

OP, will you do me a favor? Slap a scope or a red dot on that thing and see what kind of groups you can get at 100y. I tried everything including hand loads through mine. The rifle produces 3-4 moa at best.

Its about right. Mine does 2-3 at 50 yards with Millett DMS-1 on magnification of 4. About 4 at 100 yards. Federal 150-180 grain

I would have been happy with 2-3, but 4-5 was is the norm out of my rifle with the same ammo that shoots 1/2 Moa out of my LTR.

That upper rail is tricky. I located the scope rings as close to the rear as possible (have extended rail) and directly over where the rail attaches to the receiver. The manner in which the rail is secured forward beyond that point is a total joke and has probably given more than one guy problems.

Shooting indoors I've shot one ragged 5-shot hole at 25y with the old 2-MOA dot I had on there.

For the test it'll be FGMM 168, maybe chrono data to help others out.

You mean Remi700 LTR?
If so, there is no comparison. It will eat Socom II for breakfast.

Yes remmy ltr. I'm just letting you know that I'm still getting bad groups while using precision hand loads. I'm not comparing rifles.

Drey
04-22-2012, 10:32 AM
I didnt notice the big difference in moa between the ammo Ive used. Federal 150-180, Winchester, Remington all gave me the similar groups. To my surprise Tula was the best, I just had a few FTF here and there. I didnt try any precision ammo, like Norma, or handloads but from my experience with this rifle I dont think it would make much of the difference. It shoots stable and predictable, eats pretty much anything you throw at it, has a good grouping all day long (yes, I call 3-4 moa at 100 yards all day long very good grouping for this rifle) and if someone complains about its weight I say hit the gym. :-)

I'm with you here. If I can hit a bowling pin at 100 yards I'm good. And for those who complain about the weight shouldn't be shooting real guns go shoot airsoft:43:
