View Full Version : I am a War Veteran now: Ruger MK III

I was installing the VQ Mk II Hammer bushing into my Ruger MK III and pulled the retaining pin out all the way on accident and about a million little pieces of all sorts fell out all over my carpet...

30 minutes later and staring at photos online... IT'S BACK TOGETHER AND WORKS!

What a battle...

Words of wisdom for anyone installing the bushing to remove the magazine disconnect safety: Slooowly and caaarefully pull the hammer pin out to the left just enough to lift out the hammer and garbage parts to the right of it. :oji:

Otherwise it's raining smallmetalparts.

Trigger is better and now my magazines go flying out at the click of the release button.

You had it much worse then me
Tonight. I was field stripping and cleaning my mossberg 930 after a day of trap. Pulled the trigger whrn i had the assemgly out and springs and pieces flew everywhere. Luckily I googled and found a post with pictures of a DIY trigger test down reassembly. Saved my night.

Nothing like launching bits and pieces of your firearm everywhere... What would we do without the internet? I wouldn't have a Ruger pistol right now I can tell you that much.

So true! Thanks to youtube and the guntalk-online howto's, I took the plunge and completely detail stripped my 22/45 for a Sam's bushing install and slingshot mod before I even shot it.

I haven't fired my 22/45 yet and I've been taking it apart and putting it back together just because I refuse to be puzzle by it. So far I've done the slingshot mod and have the LCI out for cleaning, soon I'll have a Sam Lam bushing and a VQ trigger and sear. All before I even shoot it, probably, haha.

Ruger should probably sponson RimfireCentral.com, if they aren't already.

YES! I have the VQ MKII bushing, target trigger, and target sear, They're awesome! I thought the slingshot mod was cool at first, but you should be aware that it will fail to "slingshot" forward if for whatever reason the gun happens to be upside down. The bolt release lever works just fine for me. I know some people put a spring in it to create constant downward pressure but I just don't see it's practicality.

I don't really see any scenarios where I will need to operate the 22/45 upside down, but I am going to put a spring in as soon as I have a proper dremel. I just put in a Sam Lam bushing today, works awesome! Waiting on VQ parts now.

I believe a rubber mallet should come with every 22/45 mark III to use when taking it apart and putting it back together.

90 mins and some blood but I finally got mine back together.

Can somebody summarize or make a list of the desired mods to make to a 22/45? Just a short list is all I need and I will go to rimfire central and do my research. Thanks. Mine is bone stock right now.

Heck, I once got a standard Mk 1 for free just because the owner couldn't re-assemble it after taking it apart for cleaning. He admired the gun, but couldn't handle it's "complexity".

Ripped apart my girlfriends MK3 22/45 tonight.
Pretty easy to work on really..
Hardest part was getting the damn pin out and back in; had to use a rubber mallet.

Did the following:
Slingshot mod
DIY Bushing mod (2 5M washers worked for me)
Chamber load indicator mod

I have a friend who has a Ruger MK I which he bought around 1978. He has NEVER broken it down to clean it and basically cleans the barrel, chamber, magazine and well, and puts oil on the finish. He has got to have way over 10,000 rounds through that gun and it still works like the day it was new. Heck of a gun.

Keep a big ole plastic ziploc bag nearby when you do this next time and just disassemble the trick parts in the bag so if something flies away it'll (hopefully) stay in the baggy.

^^^This. Any brand MKII bushing will do, I went with VQ. Everything else is unnecessary!

So I'm ordering VQ parts for a MK III and will get the accurizing kit and a VQ MK II bushing kit. Do I order a MK II or MK III accurizing kit? Just a little confused because I read somewhere that a VQ MK II bushing won't fit correctly on a MK III hammer.

Every time I hear it suggested they say get the MK2 kit, not 100% sure tho
