View Full Version : Best Optic or Sights for Appleseed?

Planning on doing the Appleseed program with my 13 year old son this year. He will shoot my Ruger 10/22, stock w iron sights. I have a Windham Weaponry SRC with the Nikon .223 2x8x32 scope but I also have an Aimpoint Pro on my AR pistol that I could put on my Windham.
Any recommendations on an optic that will be best for Appleseed? I am not sure of the distances and drills I will be doing, all I know is it is a lot of prone shooting? I would just use iron sights on the Windham but my eyes are not what they used to be and I really need some sort of magnification to have any chance of being accurate.
What did you use to go through Appleseed?

they like to recommend the tech sights for the 10/22 and I put a set on one rifle.. I found the adjustments were not exactly as advertised with the set I got.. the scope with a .25 MOA adjustment would be great and you will shoot better if trying to be a rifleman.. The main thing is go not matter how your rifle is set as and have a good time..

I have been wanting to do Appleseed for a year, just hard to find a totally unbooked weekend.
I am debating on shooting my AR versus just buying another 10/22 for myself. It would cost almost the same to buy the 10/22 as it would 500-700 rounds of 5.56. Any input on shooting a 10/22 versus my AR for me?

Just got back from sighting in three 10/22's with Tech Sights. Took my bro who has a trophy from the Army for shootin'. With the target at 50 feet (max), one of his groups was the size of a dime. Good enough. :)

If you don't mind spending the money on shells go for it.. i know all my ar's are more accurate than my 10/22's even just shooting cheao ammo..

Would my 2x8 scope have too much magnification for the distances I would shooting at Appleseed?

not at all, no moving targets and just punching paper.. good to go
