Always remember, treat every firearm as though it is loaded. Clear your weapon(s) BEFORE starting this project if you wish to use this thread as an instructional. I assume NO responsibility.

Wassup peeps, I finished my discreet guitar/rifle case earlier today and I think it turned out pretty cool. Whaddayathink!

Tools and supplies:

Cheap-as-eff hardshell acoustic guitar case

3" HD Foam (46 inches of it)

1" HD Foam (46 inches of it)

Black Felt (55" of it)

Box Cutter

Regular Scissors

Spray Adhesive

Sharpie

It was rather simple actually;
simply set acoustic case on the foam and felt, trace with sharpie and cut with box cutter, cut felt with scissors. Cut foam slowly for nice smooth outline. Trace the outline of your AR15 on the 3" foam and cut about 1.75" to 2 " in depth or as desired (no less though, you want the charging handle to clear the top).
Spray adhesive to the face and sides of foam, let dry for 30 min, respray. Apply felt quickly (felt side up ). Press felt firmly to your carbine's footprint first, then start working it outwards but don't pull on it. You want the felt hugging the sides of the foam. Trim as needed.

Assuming you have already cleared the inside of guitar case down to bare wood; spray adhesive to both lid and body of guitar case and wait for 30 min, spray again right before installing the foam. You may need to "kneed"/ massage foam into guitar case body. Tuck any excess felt inwards. Do the same for the lid.

That's all. Remember to set up shop in a well ventilated area. Enjoy!

Perfect. FYI, a soft sided "gig bag" for a Stratocaster is perfect for a 20" AR with a fixed stock.

Thanks man! I bought the foam and felt from Joanne's fabric store. I had everything else I needed.

Yeah I bought a baby Taylor soft case from craigslist but opted for the hardshell.

Nice job. You could probably make a few of these and sell them here.

:oji: Hmmm.... you may be onto something there. I guess all I would need is the actual size firearm outline, guitar case, color felt wanted (it also comes in woodland camo FYI) and cash up front (for labor and supplies costs of course). Mind you this is my first time at attempting something like this but I feel it turned out the way I imagined it in my head. Plus, one would only get better with time. Cheers!

Pretty clever. A molded hard shell strat case may work really well and would not take up as much space. Let me check when I get home..

Thanks! Just make sure your guitar case is not a "molded" model eg. for a specific type of guitar. I don't have experience with those types of cases but the take I get is that since it's molded I imagine underneath the felt or cloth interior sits a plastic frame that may be a permanent part of the case, hence why I chose a generic acoustic hard shell case. The hardware (handle and locks) can always be upgraded if I wish but it seems to be holding up just fine. If I were to upgrade I would get something like this for the latches: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=butterfly+latch&hl=en&safe=off&prmd=imvns&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1366&bih=667&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=11763998020422751252&sa=X&ei=gGqLT_WkNMKziQK61I2nCw&ved=0CHoQ8wIwBQ and this: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=flight+case+handles&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=12647194140828668971&sa=X&ei=X2uLT5OgHYWciAL7nOD_Cw&ved=0CH4Q8wIwAA

Awesome. I did something similar for my MSAR, but I used a violin case.

This is really cool! I have a hardshell guitar case that isn't quite the right size for my guitar, perhaps I will repurpose it like this.

Do it bro! It's a rewarding project. Plus, you can head out to the range without the case screaming "Hey! Everyone! I'm not a rifle!". Post pics of the finished product when you can. Peace!

Your case turned out great! I carry my Draco in a padded tennis racket case. Has a shoulder strap and a lockable zipper also.
