What to you guys think is a good number for an AR platform? I usually end up with about 5 mags for each rifle.

I have 5 mags for each finger.

Oh yeah - my answer is "how ever many makes you feel good". Personally, I wouldn't have any less than a dozen or two.

Are you talking about hi cap mags or 10 rounders? If it's 10rd mags then as many as you can get a hold of. :p

If it's 10-rounders, you may as well stop at 1 because you're gonna get outgunned before that one is empty.

Yes mainly talking about 10 rounders. And thats exactly what Im thinking. My rule is that I must be stocked up on mags and ammo for a rifle before I buy another one.

At a minimum, I'd say 5 mags for each of your guns.

The answer is always twice as many as you just posted in this thread.

I have 8. I want about 15. So I need 30.

Iraqis? Maybe two
Russians? Four
Americans? All of them!

More than you think you will need. In Vietnam: Lurps carried up to 40 M-16 20rd mags each loaded with 18 rounds to prevent jams. If they had a M-60 in the team, each would carry a 100 round belt. Then they carried at least 10 hand grenades & at least 1 Claymore mine. Some also carried a LAW rocket. Some carried a sidearm with extra mags. Seals who used the Stoner carried up to 5 plastic boxes (100 rounds) of belted ammo + the box clipped to the gun. Read some of the books by them & get a feel of what it's like to run low on ammo while being outnumbered and far from safety.

IMO, anything less than 10-20 (depending on capacity & caliber) loaded hi-cap mags is not enough. Figure that you will never get a chance to get more ammo. Trying to load empty mags (even with stripper clips & guides) while under fire or in the dark (do they teach ninja mag refilling yet?) is not something I want to try doing. It's also easy to lose empty mags during combat panic reloading. Mags with be just as hard to get as ammo when the SHTF. A lot of guys in combat have gotten plenty of holes in their uniform, canteens, packs, pouches, etc. A magazine with bullet damage will most likely be junk. Loaded mags have also worked as body armor.

I don't have any 10 round AR mags and I don't know how many 30 round mags is enough.

I am pretty sure I have enough.

Should I go count them?

Ding126
04-12-2012, 8:44 PM
Are we talking recreational shooting or hypothetical, imaginary future battles played out in the mind??

AR's = 30 loaded mags ( 1k rnds +/- )
HK91 = 500 rnds of loaded mags
Pistols 3-4 mags ea

It's one thing staying put with loaded mags but another to be mobile and asking yourself how much you can carry. I prefer the hollywood never ending mags, never having to reload weapons that always hit the target. Then it's one mag of each caliber

I carried 14 thirty round mags on patrol, M9 with 2 extra mags, in addition to having a few frags, HE 203 rounds, and immediate access to a 240 or ma duce with at least 2K of ammo, a AT4, not to mention the rest of the truck's load out and what the others were carrying.

Thank you, but mine pales in comparison to countless others, wish I had done more, who knows, might get that wish in spades, careful what you wish for, right?

Anywho, in getting back to the original question, and cutting thru the scotch infused memories, I think we are potentially discussing two separate issues, possession: can never have too many, and to have on you at any one time, which really depends on mobility and other other g ear requirements.

For example, say I was to deploy again as an FO, where I have a ton of electronics and commo gear that I have hump around, I think three mags on my vest, one or two on my belt, one in the gun and then 6 in my pack on my back would be acceptable as my job is to be on the radio calling in arty, not shooting hadji in the face. however if I was to be a door kicker again, well no more expensive, bulky electronics, so I would bulk up on mags, figure the same number as the last deployment, 14, or more, plus a handful of 40mm for the M320 (still need to break it in :43:)

However, looking at it from a civilian POV, say in a SHTF situation, honestly mobility and having a low profile is the more important so I'd say one in the gun, and two to three spares. Honestly, if you find yourself in a protracted firefight you done F'ed up majorly. Heck, I'd personally avoid shooting period short of actually zombies unless I absolutely had no choice, better to go unnoticed.

I think it depends on what your intentions are. If your planning on sport shooting than a couple should suffice. If it's a tactical situation then only should be the judge of that. By the way keep it legal and safe.

for rifles id say atleast 10, minimum 5.
Pistols mags, maybe 5 or 6.
the movies really gives pistols too much credit in combat. If your rifle goes down for whatever reason and you have to whip out your pistol, youre pretty much screwed.

Do you shoot at a range or are you planning for SHTF? Are you patrolling your neighborhood or holding a line? I use 2-3 10 rounders at the range unless I am taking a carbine class. I never seem to have enough mags in a carbine class with 10 rounds max in Kalifornia.

If SHTF and you train to drop mags when speed reloading, you'll need a whole lot. If you use a dump pouch and save your mags, you can get by with fewer. Unless you are military with consistent, guaranteed logistical resupply, always assume that you will not have access to new mags in the future. More is better!

Assume that your comrades may count on you to provide covering fire to keep them safe. I was taught that minimim covering fire when the team is E&E is a round every 5-10 seconds to keep heads down. That's 6-12 rounds or approximately one 10 rounder per minute.

On the other side of the coin, remember that a 30 round mag weighs 1 lb and you must carry water to stay hydrated. Therefore, it really depends on your task at hand.

I have 5 x 30 rounders 1 x 20 rounder and 1 x 10 rounder for the AR15 built with an Armalite (EA) lower and bushmaster upper. A 2 x 20 rounders for the FAL. I don't do button locked rifles or featureless rifles so I don't really have a use for 10 rounders.

Cato
04-13-2012, 12:36 PM
For the casual shooter, one is enough.

Now if you're a prepper or just like the look of a full chest rig, you'll need ten.

stix213
04-13-2012, 12:38 PM
For a range gun, I'd say at least 2 of any capacity. For a primarily defensive gun I'd go with enough mags to have at least 90 rounds loaded up (number of mags varies by their capacity). Depends on the kind of gun and how it would be used though. I wouldn't get a dozen mags for an LCP for example.

10 rounder, 1 to 2 for range use. Home defense, no point having too many, since your mag is sort of locked anyway, better have more mags for a handgun instead.

Personally, despite it being mostly for target shooting, I want 10 ten round magazines. My Colt came with two 9 round magazines which I thought was really odd. I've obtained 4 Magpul 20's pinned to 10 rounds each. I will probably order 6 more later on. Then I'll have enough for the first hour of shooting.

I'll keep the steel Colt magazines loaded for home defense.

No such thing. However, bare minimum is 3 magazines per firearm. Running out of loaded magazines in a firefight is the same as running out of ammo.

russ69
04-13-2012, 5:35 PM
Common magazines (AR15) are not a problem, you can always get more. For a less common gun, you should get 3 so you always have 2 good working magazines. Some of the less common mags can get pretty expensive but spend the money and get them now.

Norcalkid
04-13-2012, 5:41 PM
I want at least 15, 20 or 30ís for every SHTF rifle with ammo and I never let my ammo get below 1k(usually a lot more). I donít have any 10 rounders for the AR but if required I guess I would only have one for the range.

But yah Iím the guy that doesnít even know where they all are. And to be honest I think keeping a low profile with a comfortable well concealed pistol in holster would be better 99% of the time.

Well lets see here, I have a storage container in the garage full of 30 round ar-15 mags another smaller container for 20 round .308, hundreds of garand ammo clips, even 5 50cal magazines. Currently only have a handful of 1911 mags but they are growing.

All of course for when the SHTF:TFH: because we all know that ammo will be the currency of the future :D

3 10/30 pmgas
4 10/20 pmags
2 mags that I can not speak of nor do they exist ;)

I actually only use the 4 10/20 pmags when I take the AR15 out. I have a speed loader so it's not a big deal to just use those 4.

The last time I did a mag inventory I counted the mags, the capacities, how many weapons, how much mag capacity total, and average capacity. I had well over a hundred mags, and I remember about 2500 rd mag capacity total. This was about 6 guns ago.
Do Garand clips and SKS stripper clips count?
I have about 2 dozen mags each for the RAW FAL and my M1A.
I also have about 2 dozen 1911 mags, but these are for 4 different .45 cal 1911's.
