If you have a Register Assault Weapon (RAW) AR type lower to mount it on, yes they are.

Otherwise, nope. http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/.50_BMG_rifles

if you build it as a crew served firearm yes, no stock makes it not a rifle

i have discussed this with other calguns members on a different thread that i cannot find...but the conclusion was that there is no such thing as a "crew served firearm"

these weapons are subject to all california laws including the 50 BMG ban and the 10 rd capacity law

The laws involved always refer to rifles (http://oag.ca.gov/firearms/50bmg), not weapons. The state has not regulated title 1 non rifle .50 BMGs. (http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=pen&group=30001-31000&file=30500-30530) So, in theory you could put the Franklin Armory CWS spade handle trigger group (http://www.franklinarmory.com/PRODUCTS_CSW.html) and be good. This thread (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=408650) may help as well.
Iím not sure that 58 county DAs would agree with me though. In fact Iím almost sure in a couple of counties they would arrest and charge first to see if they could get a conviction regardless of title 1 status and legal definition of the word rifle.
How bad do you want one? How much have you got for a legal defense fund? The answers need to be large amounts in both answers.
.50 DTC fixes all of the above, just canít get one from SH.
Another option would be to have it rechambered after you buy it to .50 DTC.

i dont know man this seems like pushing it. I have read that discussion you linked to but i have also read a lot of others that came to different conclusions...i wouldnt risk it.

i would just go with .50 DTC
