buuuuutttttttt,

Which would you buy?

Going with a 300 win mag (both my father and step father shoot this caliber so come hunting season we will all have the same caliber).

Don't want to spend over 1500.

It will be used for hunting only. Antelope, deer, elk, oryx, and maybe moose in the future, or even a trip to South Africa for some other type of game.

I already have the optic. Millett TRS-1

Now to the meat of the question.

Which do you like better? If so why? If not what would you recommend?

Please feel free to respond with anything else that tickles your fancy.

Edit: I also want something that is under 8lbs with out glass.

Thanks in advance for any advice you may share :)

Looking at this for the low price Mossberg 4x4:

But really like this, but it taps out my budget Tikka TAC:

That sucker is over 15 lbs, would you really want to hump that thing around?

I like this one also, but it's a wee bit out of my price range and a little on the heavy side. Plus if you figure, if I go on 4 hunts a year and do them proper I'll only literally be pulling the trigger four times a year after my hunting rifle is sighted in. That's why I'm leaning towards that Mossburg 4x4. Although I have read that due to the light synthetic stock that it kicks like a mule even with the built in brake. I image that all the 300 win mag's do though. I grew up shooting 7mm mags as a teen so the recoil is not a big issue.

Winchester Model 70 Sporter?

I think it's about 8.5 lbs and is around $1200 if I remember correctly.

Mine seems pretty accurate (9 out of 10 in the 10 ring at 100 yards) and it's real smooth once it loosens up a little after purchase. The only downside is the 3 point safety can be a little stiff.

A Tikka, then a Savage, then a T/C bolt action, then a Mossberg or Stevens would be my order of choice. I would buy a regular HUNTING rifle and not the target/varmit/sniper etc type. I do not care how fit you are a very heavy rifle will be a negitive factor when big game hunting. I have done it but found that a normal hunting rifle works out better.

"I" would use a Leupold 3X9X40 or 3.5X10X40 non-AO scope. When hunting the K.I.S.S. princple is best. My 300Win Mag is a Ruger tang safety M77 with a Leupold 3X9X40 Varri-X II and is Mag-n-Ported. It has a Pachmyer Decell recoil pad and shoot very well. I have shot pronghorns at over 500-600 yards but do not like to.

Divernhunter I like your choice in rifles. I have the same one, but in 30-06. Who knows I might just scrap the whole get a new hunting rifle and stick with my current rig. Decisions, decisions. If I go that route I could finally this:

That is the largest optic I have ever seen on a hunting rifle.

They are real I promise. My mom dropped this beauty from a 330 yard shot with her 7mm mag Rem 700. I was so proud of her. Although she dropped it off it a bad spot and we spend the rest of the day and a case of water dragging her harvest back to the truck. Man I earned my ride that day. That was her once in a life time hunt at WSMR in NM.

That is the largest optic I have ever seen on a hunting rifle.

It's the sun shade makes it look that way. Millett is very protective of their optics and includes some massive sun shades with their scopes.
