View Full Version : BCM Charging Handle. Medium or Large?

I was thinking about getting it for the latch to begin with, then after some research I discovered it fixes a problem having to do with the design of standard charging handles.

So which do you guys prefer? I'm bending towards medium unless someone has a reason the large is better.

I have the medium and it's fine. People with the large often complain it gets in the way and hangs up on stuff.

I have the medium latch on most of my AR's. I have one large latch (on my SPR).

The medium latch extends out far enough for me, enough so that I don't get much, if any, benefit from the large.

be warned: side sling plus medium or large can equal a kidney probe if you're not careful going for the right-handed GI carry position.

i have an upper with a mod 5 (small) and another with a mod 4 (medium), and it's definitely a concern with the latter. it's nothing i can't deal with now that i know, but i wouldn't go with the mod 3 unless i knew i'd never GI carry that rifle.

Medium, doesn't bother me at all.

Medium Mod 4 on my DDM4.. The large just seemed like overkill, i would stick to the small or medium for bigger hands.

Large is no good and serves no additional benefit from the medium. All it does for me is dig into my stomach or side when i've on a sling.

The medium works just as well as the large in terms of operation.

I prefer medium (Mod 4). Small didn't offer much over a standard charging handle for me and large was well.. too large.

Medium is pretty big. You would need a pretty big scope to need the large latch.

I like the medium but depending on the rifle I might try small.

Mod 4 / Medium works for me.

I have no problem accessing it even with a large scope mounted (USO SN3 3.2-17x ERGO).

Mod 3 for rifles with large optic scopes, Mod 4&5 for RDS, smaller scoped rifles or carbines.

I run Mod3 (Large) on both my AR's. Easy to use and looks great. Since I rarely find myself slinging it around town and more often have it on the bench at the range, it's a good choice for me.

I use med..

Large worked for me in the last course i took. I also had gloves on though so that was probably why it worked. My backup AR has a medium and that works fine too.

I have large - easy to charge even with the little piggy that went to market....:D But I use this for a scoped rifle where I have trouble getting to a std. charging handle because my scope is far back. If I didn't use a scope this far back it would be a med.

I'm buying it this week, the mod 4. I ordered one last week and found out the site was a issue waiting to happen. Avoid Midwest hunter outlets. I'm getting it through cheaper than dirt since I couldn't find it any cheaper while still being a reputable website.

Larges on both of my ARs. Works great for civilian plinking.

04-09-2012, 7:51 PM
I have both. Function wise, the large is definitely better for left single hand quick charging. But if you are wearing a sling it pokes you on the chest and can get hung up. If you are gonna be using a sling slot, go medium. If you are gonna bench shoot or never use a sling, get large.

I never thought I needed one until I tried one lol. I couldn't figure out why someone would spend $45 on a friggin charging handle and then I shot an AR with one and I wondered why I didn't buy one a long time ago. It isn't a "need" but it does make charging the handle a lot nicer, especially if you have a scope on your AR.

Just got mine today. Love it. I thought the latch would be metal, maybe it just feels plastic to me. But the thing feels rock solid. Great Buy. Only thing we gotta worry about is another semi automatic rifle ban :/.

BCM has a winner here, I can see why everyone recommends them.

They even threw in a bunch of sticker decals. I was surprised I got in 3 days.

Always used large mod3's on my issued weapons as well as my personal AR (when I had one). Given how I've always trained and conditioned myself to use gross rather than fine motor movements when manipulating the weapons (i.e. using the side of my palm to rack the charging handle rather than grasping the catch with my fingers), it works out really well for me. I've never had any issues with it poking, catching, or hanging up on anything. Plus with gloves on it really helps.

Unless they've beefed up the pin area, it looks as if it could suffer the same failures as a USGI type when using weak side manipulation.

Love my BCM medium.... Got a couple when primary arms was having a sale on them for $35... Might try a large in the future to see if there is a big difference.
