Found this ad from a Gun store I use to go to back in the 80's. Check out the prices on the M1 and Enfield. I thought this place was expensive back then . OMG If I only knew!!

The AR-15 , Enfield, and Mosin Nagant are expensive if these are 1980s prices. You can still build a budget AR-15 for the prices listed. Mosin Nagants are still cheaper. Enfields were only $100 until 4-5 years ago.

Back then the SPAS12 was 2 weeks of take home pay. Today I can get a LOT of toys for 2 weeks of take home pay!

Odd that the Chinese T53s were advertised for more back then than they are being sold for now. Was there a ban in place on Chinese weapons back then? Late 1980s predates Clinton's presidency and I know that he put his foot down on importing weapons from China.

Its interesting to see that the Chinese T53s were being advertised at more than they are being sold for nowadays. I'm wondering if that is because of the politics at the time. Were Chinese weapons restricted from import back in the late 1980s too?

Not that I know of, but M/Ns were not common back then. The Soviets were still holding on to all their refurbs, so there weren't boatloads of 91/30s on the market.

Yep that's pretty interesting... goes to show that not necessarily everything goes up in value all the time, which seems to be conventional wisdom among collectors but anyone who bought a chinese mosin 20 years ago has lost 50% of their value on an inflation adjusted basis.

It's only partially due to the increase in value of guns. It's your money that has less purchasing power.

Yeah, remember that importation of military surplus firearms was banned from 1968 to 1984. When they finally lifted the import ban for milsurps that were C&R, there was a lot of pent up demand for the stuff.

When factoring in inflation, that Colt Sporter AR would cost $1,202.35 in today's dollars.

I can't say whether the prices were good or bad at the time, but when you factor in inflation, I wouldn't say that the value has gone up any higher than the cost of inflation.

Funny how some of those prices are high. But the carbine and garands are great deals there. 200 for a carbine great deal.

Had we remained on the gold standard there would be no inflation. In 1930 a $20 gold piece got you a real nice suit. Today the same $20 gold piece will get you a real nice suit.
