I live in north Los Angeles county and the nearest place to shoot is called a place to shoot . I'm not a Huge fan of 12$ to shoot since that's an extra 40 .223 rounds so me and a couple buddies headed west in the high desert to go find a place to shoot. We made a left on a dirt road and headed into the rolling hills . 5 min on the dirt road in the middle of nowhere it appeared. A 1500 acre complex called Shea's Castle. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b0/Shea%27s_Castle.jpg

A neat site on the way. We took another side road and when we were driving over shotgun shells we stopped and set up shop. No issues the whole time. Shot for over 2 hours and had a blast. Looks like I have a new shooting spot.

Wow, I was just joking with some friends about what I'd do with the money if I had won that huge Mega Millions. One was to build a huge castle with a moat and draw bridge.

Just googled it and found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shea's_Castle

Neat history... natural hot springs and a FAA approved landing strip? Awesome place to call home.

How far did you have to drive? Wondering if the $12 range fee was a wash in gas fees?

OBTW, cool castle!

a FAA approved landing strip

"Sky Castle" airport doesn't appear on aeronautical charts anymore and is X'd out at the ends. Looks like it could be used by the owner with a little work however.

If that is just 3 miles north of lake elizabeth and off munz ranch road you were lucky. That is all private property both sides of road and no shooting allowed. It adjoins antelope valley sportsmans club and I know you can't shoot there without permission.

I'd use it as a 1,000+ m range!

FAIL. Just driving out to the middle of nowhere and pulling over to shoot where you see spent rounds does NOT make it legal or safe.

Shea's Castle is privatly owned. Your luck you did not get ram rodded by local LE.

what you're missing is that the middle of the desert =/= fair game to shoot. Could be private property, or even if it was blm, it still may have shooting restrictions.

So is this what people are talking about when they say "castle doctrine"?

I wonder if it has any suits of armor inside. It would be fun to fit one with remote control mechatronics and then screw with your buddies...especially after a few drinks late at night.

You are the one that needs to make sure your legal when goin shooting. From what you described, you just drove out to the middle of nowhere until you found spent casings on the ground. That does not make it legal or safe and can impact the rest of us in the firearms community.

You are missing actually doing your own research and due diligence before you go out and shoot. Every time I trek out and find a new shooting spot I take BLM maps, and check the BLM website, and other sources for any shooting restrictions in that area. Its your responsibility to stay within the law, ignorance is not an excuse.

Here is a thread another member made, it should point you in the right direction of what you are supposed to do before you actually go out and start shooting.

There are even restricted areas where I go in the desert, clearly indicated on maps and websites. We use GPS units to make sure we know where we are.

Oh my God that brought back memories. I knew the person that lived there, he was/is a preacher. Inside the house was awesome, takes you back in time, well minus the big screen tv they had.

I knew his daughter also, we went to Quartz Hill High together. She was beyond hot and she lived in a castle. Then she got married. :(
