Hey y'all,

Im looking for some reloading data for 175 grain sierra match king bullets in a 1:10 twist. What powder have you found to be the most accurate? (and what velocities.) It'll be shot out of a Remington 700 AAC-SD by the way.

I was thinking RL 15.. I'll probably end up picking up sierra's reloading manual, but what are you guys working with?

-Thanks

I'm working with Varget anywhere from 43.5-44gr for the 175gr SMK also shot out of an AAC-SD. I haven't chrono'd my loads...I just take a looksee at my groupings. :D

Every rifle is unique. The key to accuracy is consistency.

This is what I use on my stock R700 SPS tactical (20inch bbl).

As one can see, there is nothing out of the ordinary. I do get good results.

175 SMK
RL-15@41.00gr
2.800 coal
2.015 Lapua brass
Cci lg primer
2700+_fps

I use a single stage RCBS Rockchucker with FL Comp dies for my rifle.

I use Varget with excellent results.

Of course you will need to do your own testing.

RL15, Varget, 4064, 4895, N140, and N150 are all good powders for 175 grain .308 loads.

44.0 of Varget for my .308. Is it the best? Don't know, but it's the best so far.

I use 42gr of RL-15 under either 168 or 175gr match kings in my SPS tactical 1/12 twist. They group 5/8 or better at 100yds but there is no way, no way you will get 2700fps out of that load in a 20" barrel. The most important thing I've found in loading for mine is consistent neck tension. Anneal or $#it can the brass when you feel stiffness on the upstroke during resizing. The manuals give you a general idea of how to cross reference in terms of different powders and velocity. I have found that my particular rifles are not picky as far as powder, I've shot 3/4 MOA and under with
39.5gr of 3031
42gr of H4895
42.5gr of IMR4895
42.5 gr of Varget
44.5gr of BL-C2
and my favorite 42gr of RL-15.
I guess the 308 just doesn't care, find the accuracy node, and load to that velocity.

sierra states the 175 smk works best with Viht N540 39.5 grains, 2400 fps.

I would get a copy of their load data. I have found the data to be within +/- 15 fps for varget and TAC loads. I had a string of 6 TAC loads chrony within 3fps in 223. That's accurate. No, the chrony was not broken.

If you send me your email via pm I will send you both the 223 and 308 load data...its very complete.

44 grns. of Varget gave the best results on four 308 setups.

The powder I buy in 8# bulk is IMR 4064 because I can and do use it in all but 2 rifles I load for, .243, 6mm Rem., .308, 30.06, 8x57 JS and 375 H&H. It gives the best results in .243 w/ 87 gr. Berger VLDs OAL 2.805", 8x57 JS 200 gr. Sierra MK OAL 3.200" and 375 H&H 250 gr. Barnes TTSX OAL 3.600". For .308 I've been using 44 gr. Varget 165 gr. Nosler Partition OAL 2.810" (this is a hunting load I make for my cousin). For 30.06 I've switched from 4064 to IMR 4350 behind both 168 and 190 gr. Berger VLDs OAL 3.440". Best accuracy at 2700 & 2580 fps respectively in a Rem 700 22" bbl. For 6 mm Rem. I switched from 4064 to 45.2 gr. RL-19 behind 95 gr. VLDs and 100 gr. Partitions (the VLDs are so long they don't fit in the magazine but do eject from the action). This is also a hunting load w/ magazine full of Partitions and one VLD on top with tip of the bullet on the ramp, I can close bolt over the top of this. The difference in impact between the 2 at 100 yds. is ~1" at 200 yds. ~2.5".

The 2 calibers I don't use 4064 in are 30-30 Win. and 300 Win. Mag.

Rifle powders I keep in stock:
IMR 4064*, 4350, 4831
Alliant RL-15,19,22
Hogdon Varget, H4895, Leverevolution
Winchester W760

* powder in 8# bulk

I have a AAC-SD that I reload for. I use 42.8 gr Varget, Lake City brass, CCI #34 primers and 175 gr SMKs. this load shoots on average 2577 at a density altitude of 1850, 65 degrees fahrenheit barometric pressure of 29hg, and altitude of of 1445ft. after trying many different powder charges this was the one that yielded the best accuracy for my AAC-SD.
