I got a look at my WASR that I am 7 days into waiting period and its a 1965 production, bolt and body serial numbers match, has a very slightly canted sight (I don't have the tools to fix) is missing the cleaning Rod, is in 8.5/10 condition ( I was actually impressed with condition) came with two 10/20 polymer mags, a bayonet, and some little useless leather thing. Anyways, my question is: Is it bad that I got a pre-70s production? How can I fix the canted sight correctly? Also something that is very concerning to me is that the bolt kept trying to hang up on the hammer or something. Is this something i should worry about, or get fixed somehow? Thanks in advance... that is if anyone cares lol.:(

You can polish the bolt carrier/hammer contact surfaces and that will eliminate the carrier hanging up...or you can just shoot it alot.:D Also remember not to ride the charging handle forward. I don't know why but many people just instinctively seem to want to do that. Just pull it back and let it fly.

As far as the sights are concerned. Shoot it first. You'll probably find that it shoots just fine.

In 3 years it'll be a c&r lol jk.
Before you try and change anything just shoot it! The bolt will smooth itself out quick, and your site will probably be just fine! Do you understand what a canted site is?

Yes the entire sight post is tilted about 1mm or 2mm to the right. Thanks or the congratulation! I'm sure I will be very happy with it!

Yes i plan to shoot about 40 rounds before I do ANYTHING, and then address issues. What would I use to polish the bolt surfaces?

Just shoot it and zero it. This is a true tool and weapon. It is likely the only thing u need to address is more ammo.

Also 40 rounds is nothing, break in with atleast 200 rounds.
If you have issues with that sight pm me and I can walk you thru fixing it.
Did you get any pics of it?

+1

on my WASR I think I might have run the first 40 or so near completely dry.
The spark show was awesome

Congrats.
Good advice thus far.
Shoot it first
Then address issues only as needed.
If you get it on paper with the site the way it is then leave it alone.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
The earlier rifles are just as desirable if not more so than the later ones.
Shoot and enjoy.

Okay I will take your advice and run 200+ before changing anything at all. I wont be able to get pics until Tuesday sadly...

Straight on that... I'm already looking at side/under folders. It's a shame they have to be locked....

It can be unlocked but you have to buy an extended barrel/muzzle brake.

1000rds later and I still love my WASR... When I first got it I thought I got duped but after replacing a $10 firing pin and my WASR was gold again. It's accurate with irons and a T-1 at 350 yards. Past that I can't see what I'm hitting anymore... best gun purchase next to my G17.

It depends if you got experience with an AK iron sight and then just start it off @ 100 yds if its hits a target around 12 inch in diameter then its good to go. :)

If not I would start it out on 50 and see if you can hit a 12 inch target if you hit it then your sight is good to go if not you might just have to fix the sights :(

you are in good shape then because much past that that round drops faster than a pink thong backstage at a Justin Bieber concert

Mr Plink lol..... Thanks for the link ChaneRZ, wouldn't that look a little funny with the position of the front sight being where it is?

One VERY CRITICAL QUESTION; your answer WILL DETERMINE how WELL this rifle will serve you! .... you need to be precise, and on the spot for this.... are you READY:

Is this rifle OLDER than YOU?!

i just got a wasr and i keep puncturing primers, i was wondering what was wrong with your firing pin?

It could be a couple of things. When I posted my trouble here last year, I had some comments like, head spacing is off or the bolt face was damaged. I did some research on my own and asked in several other forums and I made my own conclusion that the pin was worn.

Here is the link to the thread I posted here (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=461536).

My problem was the pin being worn to the point where the tip couldn't properly strike the primer. Also if it managed to set a round off the extra space would cause the popped primer issue. Hope this helps. Be safe if you decided to test some of these fixes on your WASR.

don't worry about sticky bolt much (there's plenty videos on how to fix it)
but zero rifle accordingly to canted sight. If your trigger group will get shaky get retaining plate http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29836

What do you mean shaky trigger group?

What do you mean shaky trigger group?

I'm guessing that he's refering to the hammer/trigger pins popping out or getting too loose. Never mind on that.

:oji: Tip o the day:
IF you shoot corrosive ammo, remove the slant muzzle brake and grease the threads before you shoot. You'll be glad you did.
BTW, Yugo surplus ammo (corrosive primers) shoots the best of any ammo I have tried in my AK rifles.
Good luck with your rifle.

Well, I'm going to pick up my rifle in about an hour or less!!!!! I currently have about 250 rounds of Tulammo FMJs. I will try and get pics up after I clean it up a bit. I plan on refinishing the wood almost immediately either Charcoal color (like grey) or Russian red. What do you guys think on the Finish? Thanks a lot guys. I am very excited. :)

Well I am not happy with the extremely large profile mag lock they have installed....is there anything I can do about that? Also, does anybody know a website where I can buy 10/30 mags? I will be coloring the wood in the "RED RUSSIAN" color in a few days. I would also like to know what kind of finish they have on these rifles? Seems like spray paint lol. Thanks a lot guys, I'm very much looking forward to getting it out on the range!

Good god what is that hideous thing? Get yourself a solar tactical or assault planet mag lock. Much less offensive. Remember to remove your pistol grip before you swap, so that the rifle will be featureless while its un-locked.

Looks good man. I hope mine looks like that, still waiting to get paid and pay it off. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have the cleaning rod but that's not a big deal. Bullseye Sport in riverside has the 10/30 mags and I think rebuilds too.
