View Full Version : Recommendation on new .308 rifle

I'm thinking about getting a new rifle in .308 / 7.62 and wondered what people thought of the following:

M1A Scout Squad
PWS MK II
Larue
SCAR 17
Other recommendations?

Main use would be range, desert/BLM fun and on rare occasions, coyote hunting.

Thanks.

Bill

Not that familiar with list after M1A. Are they all BB in CA?

Rudigan,

Yup everything other than the Scout uses a BB. That's one nice thing about the M1A's.

Do you have the Scout Squad?

in that case, it is hard to beat a armalite pattern AR10 for accuracy and versatility

twice as accurate and a M!A out of the box, scopes bolt right on and it's a smidgen less money to boot

Yes. Totally bad ars! I mostly just use it for blasting and throwing mass quantities of lead downrange for therapeutic reasons. Works every time. I will never get rid of it. Only cons, Slightly heavy, but I'm fine with it, and it can be pricey to shoot a lot.

If you do a search you should find tons of threads on other's input on the Scout, and the other M1A models, I think for the Scout you'll find the overwelming majority give it a very good or better review.

what is your price range. I would get a AR10 type, right now if I had the funds I would get the GAP-10.

I chose the SCAR17S because of the philosophy behind it. It takes the positive qualities from the AK47 and the AR pattern rifles and merges them into a hybrid. You can tell this by the build quality, how the pieces fit together, it's reliability, and it's performance down range.

If you choose the SCAR path it will be an amazing journey, albeit an expensive one;)

If you want an AR style, go with the LMT or Larue. The SCAR is pretty cool too.

I only have experience with the LMT, and I have read nothing but great things with the Larue.

The only downside to the LMT is that it is kind of on the heavy side, but if you are a "real" man then you should be able to handle carrying it around with a sling :p

How about a Shuff's Mini-G? Heard good things about it.

They have a LM8 model coming out, supposedly shaving 1.5 pounds off the MWS, that may make the decision even tougher. What torques me off about LMT is the pricing, it jumped $600 overnight for no apparent reason. IMHO, the contract with the Brits and a ten pound empty weight didn't warrant the increase.

The LM8 saves about a 1/2 pound from what I've read.

The pricing is likely just demand driven. When they are taking orders months out there will be upward pricing pressure. But the 308 LM8 is only up $100 from the MWS. Which model is up $600?

* Larue = accurate, beautiful fit and finish, uses PMAG, great customer support
* SCAR = not as accurate as the Larue, but light, easier to clean, less recoil, a new cool factor, but way over priced IMO for what it comes with
* LWRC = accurate, beautiful fit and finish, easier to clean

What are your goals? Scoped or no scope? What is your budget?
I haven't had the pleasure of shooting a SCAR 17 yet so by default I would say go with that. hehe
As far as battle rifles go, the 308 ar is my least favorite. They are super accurate and unlike every other battle rifle, mounting a scope on is like it was suppose to be there. Every other one is some mount that you have to buy a riser for the stock to get the proper cheek weld.
FAL is a wonderful battle rifle with great ergonomics and is extremely reliable. Probably the softest shooting of the bunch. Accuracy isn't as great as the others at about 3moa but it is a battle rifle
PTR 91(HK G3 pattered), Another great battle rifle. Ergonomics are good but lacks the bolt hold open coupled with the charging handle that is in far left field and takes a pretty good jerk to work the action. Being in this state it is not really an issue but this rifle really needs the paddle release, especially with the lack of a BHO. Simple design and a solid, sturdy weapon. Cheapest of the quality battle rifles minus the saiga 308
M1a, Accurate, wonderful iron sights, DROPS MAGS freely!!!! reilable. What else can i say...

Yeah. for a GPMG, I rather have a FN MAG or M240. Of course, I know that will be impossible especially in this state.

Going back to the OP, for what you want, any of the rifles you listed will do fine. It's a case of how much do you wanna spend?

M1A Scout Squad if you want to drop mags. SCAR17 if you don't mind BBs and have ~$3000 to drop.

So I stop by the gun store and they had the SCAR 17, PWS MK2 14 and 16, couple MiA's and a HK MR72A1 (HK 417). I was impressed by the fit and finish of that HK. Very solid but heavy gun.

But what really surprised me among all the rifles I handled was how light the PWS MK 214 was. Man, you can run with that all day. Well maybe at least 10 minutes for me. :)

Anyone have any experience with the HK? Anyone had a PWS MK2?

Nice! If you had to do it again, would you go with 16 or 14? How about your scope? Dmack seemed to really like the SN3 1.8-10.

Wow that PTR looks nice! Are they based on the HK 91's?

PTR91 stands for "Precision Target Rifle 91" it is base on the HK 91 with us receiver and match every thing. I love mine i have the PTR91C the only thing about it if you are a re-loader it puts a big ding in the brass when it ejects, but the brass fly's about 40 to 50 feet at a 45 deg angle and is really cool see it fly. I paid $1175 for it new in California and i have seen the GI's go for $975 so for the money the are a great deal to.

I choose 16 over 14 coz I just want to use this beast as bench & prone target practice. But it's up to you coz 16 & 14 they are really great rifle. Go back to sniper hide and go to page 6, at the middle of page you will see my display rifle with the reloader. I use trijicon accupoint 5-20x50mm.

here another PWS MK 1 series review from Dmack it's is no a bias review you can tell http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2202139

Another SCAR fan here. While the M1 family does rock (and is considerably cheaper!), the SCAR has all the coolness and design features (read: REALLY EASY to maintain!) that make it a great all around gun.

Ok so I made the plung and put a PWS MK214 in jail. I held a REPR, HK 417, SCAR17 and almost every variation of M1A's and the PWS with the 14.5 inch barrel felt the best to me. I know if I had bought any of the other ones, I would be happy.

The final decision was just based on subjective feel and what best to me.

Now to decide on a scope... :)
