Googled how to tell the year but I could only find older guns.. I assume mine was built in the 2000's but want to make sure..
the x's are just to conceal actual number

In your case, subtract the first two digits from 100 and it gives the year: 100-02=98, so the gun was made in 1998. This only applies to Marlin made rifles, though, and there are some exceptions. The new Remington made rifles use a different system.
MarlinOwners.com has a ton of info on the Marlin lever actions. There's a PDF available on the site showing all the different models, the years they were produced and how to decipher the varying serial numbers.
