Thanks to skydiver offering to help out were comfortable having a few more guys come. If you have a kit I can supply rivets, flats etc. Just let me know what you have. 916-803-8604 aj

When: April 14-15th 2012
Where: 47th&99 addy will be sent via PM after payment.
Cost: $45 per day.
If you attend both days your second day will be discounted to $30.
AK47 and AK74 tooling.
Saigas are welcome.

******We are now full, If you have not paid for your spot by tuesday 4/9 I will have to bump you from the list, there are guys wanting in.******

****************I will have build parts available at the party for akbuilders pricing no tax or shipping. Tapco triggers will be $25***************** Standard flats etc.

We are gonna limit this to 15 builders.
If you want to attend PM me or "hawaii five-0" and we will get you on the list. You will need to prepay to attend party-2nd day can be paid on saturday.

There will be 2 complete sets of tools at this build. Everything is new and of good quality (AKbuilder). So hopefully wait time will be cut down.

Both tool owners-myself and hawaii five-0 will be helping both days, not building. We hope to get every kit built.

If this is your first build we ask that you have an original or a pupulated and headspaced new barrel kit. Also an AKbuilder flat, bent, stepped, trimmed with "TRUNNION HOLES" is recomended no tapco flats.

Asking for instruction is highly encouraged, broken drills in rear trunnions will ruin your day.We also want to avoid tool damage.

If you already have bought a non original barrel kit we will allow you but you will probably need both days to complete it. (cheaper to buy original barrel kit)
AKbuilder has kits with new US barrels populated and headspaced starting at $299

Parkerizing tank and sand blaster will be there.

We will provide all AK specific tooling but you will need your own "common" hand tooling; Screw drivers, punch set, hammer, files etc.

Required items to bring
Brake clean, 1 can if you dont intend to parkerize, 4 cans if you park.
5/32nd Drills. The sharper the bit the better aligned the holes are for your rivets. At minimum have 2 Quality Cobalt drills for demilled kits and 3 for non demilled.
Dremel if ya got one, with cut off/grinding disc, you can use mine but bring disc.
Sand paper 100 grit.
Eye and ear protection also gloves.

Additional needs if you have a new barrel kit.
Lots of sand paper 60-150 grit
Additional drills needed, atleast... 2-3mm, 1-4mm, 1-6.5mm. Quality cobalt. Thats the minimum if you brake your bits...

I have a local source for ALL build supplies at or BELOW AKbuilders pricing, rivets, center supports, flats, Tapco trigger groups, even barrels. If you need this info PM me. I believe he will have kits available also.

We need tables and chairs if ya got em post up.
Food will be quick and easy... feed yourself or I can collect and get a bunch of tacos or pizza whatever is easiest... We are not gonna BBQ or anything like that. Bring water or sodas, No alcohol please.

You should take some time and watch some videos on building.
This guy has done a pretty good job with his videos.

Punch kit
http://www.harborfreight.com/12-piece-cold-chisel-and-punch-set-66440.html
If you are removing barrel components make sure the punch kit has a punch small enough to push the 3mm pins out.

Here is how you can figure out 922R parts needed. You must have 10 or less imported parts. Meaning if 11 of the items listed below are imported you need to remove and replace with US part.
1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings or
stampings (AKbuilder flat US MADE)
(2) Barrels
(3) Mounting blocks (trunions)
(4)*Muzzle attachments (cheap easy US part)
(5) Bolts
(6) Bolt carriers
(7) Gas pistons
(8) Triggers (Tapco G2 single hook fire control group)
(9) Hammers (included in G2 FCG)
(10) Disconnectors (included in G2 FCG)
(11) Buttstocks
(12) Pistol grips (cheap easy US part)
(13) Forearm handguards
(14) Magazine body
(15) Followers
(16) Floorplates
I like to make my rifles compliant with out counting magazine parts so I can use imported mags with out worry of 922R violation. Using the Tapco FCG and US made flat gives you 4 US parts off the bat. Its up to you what other parts to change.

List for build parts you will need
Rivets that match the kit you have
http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29975
Romanian "G" kits use AKM rivets

Center support rivet 1mm
http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29976

Receiver flat with trunnion holes if this is your first build *****If youre doing a pistol kit this may not match your kit****** If you have doubts about your parts PLEASE post up what kit ya got so we can get you the right build parts
http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29823

I use red star FCG retaining plates and tapco triggers in all my rifles.
It would be a good idea to let me or hawaii five-0 know what kit youre building to make sure you have the correct parts. (If youre confused PM me and you can meet me at work and Ill sale you everything you need)
No full auto parts please.
If you have any questions PM me or hawaii five-0 and we will get ya handled
I will put * following your name once you have paid.

We will also have a professional finish sheet metal welder on hand that is offering seperate services for people(any calgunner-not just builders) who need welding projects completed(saiga holes welded up,fabrication,or if your parts kit has non matching #s,he can fill in,scrub and match them)This isn't some guy who just bought his Harbor Frieght welder, but a metal master who can make things disappear and look perfect. He also has a punch and Cincinati press/brake (industrial)on site in case you want to make a light armored vehicle!!!There will be no build party fee,as this is a seperate service offered to non builders.Bring on the saigas...Lets pretty those things up.

Could someone please point me in the right direction (list of parts I will need). I was looking on Akbuilder trying to figure out what parts I would need. I have been reading and reading and reading (I have been looking at ar15s where everything is mil-spec and universal). I have never done this before and it seems a little overwhelming with all the specialized tools and riveting and pressing. Is this party geared more towards people that have done this before.

Thanks

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you stay with USA made magazines,it will count as three parts towards your 922r compliance.

Backstrap and Five-O,

Thumbs up for puttin this together and spreading the knowledge. I was also inspired after Chiz's party and I'm puttin my own set of tools together and I'm gonna do it all over again, but this time at my own pace and in my own garage. I wish I could attend your BP - would save me a bunch on tooling, but work doesn't permit me weekends off. Nevermind the nay-sayers. $45 for access to correct tooling, a place to do this AND access to two guys that know what they're doing is a deal in my book. Hope you fellas have a great BP.

Dan

Im gonna try to keep you guys entertained with my build from this week. A pistol kit and a battfield pick up kit. I still need to wear the bluing on the BFPU so we will see how that goes.

http://i1027.photobucket.com/albums/y335/backstrap1911/DSCN0653.jpg
There is no grip screw attaching the pistol grip to the upper rifle, thats why theres no mag lock. Im still messing around with the cold blue on the receiver.

For your entertainment I will take pictures of this next project as its being built. It will be like the pistol except Im gonna put a fixed folding stock and a fake can on it.
http://i1027.photobucket.com/albums/y335/backstrap1911/DSCN0654.jpg

I should have some time for it tonight. I will be using the non folder flat pictured, should be fun.

From what I noticed from quite a few guys there is that they aren't trimming the ejector (the angled piece that sticks out from one of the rails) weren't being trimmed and is hitting the bolt and pushing the bolt into the side of the trunnion preventing the bolt to close. If others are having the same problem, take a look at the ejector. It shouldn't be dragging or hitting the bolt at all.

As far as I can calculate,we completed 21 AK's and a good portion of a VZ78.About 6 guns didnt make it to parkerize, but they functioned.

heat treated my gun, but didn't get a chance to go any further ( blasting/park/brake clean) and couldn't make sun. What should I do in the meantime before I store it? store in safe (open) or is a rifle case ok (closed)

Thanks for all of the help to day, fellas! My problematic Tula kit still needs a bit more love until it's ready to shoot, but the hosts were kind enough to help me nearly finish it.
Anyone who's interested in joining a build party, take it from me, buy a populated barrel and you'll save yourself about 6+ hours of time and frustration!

I met some cool *** gun guys! If you guys need any help with tweaking just PM me I have AK's in my hands every day lol. Ejector trimming should be done after complete assembly ya never know how things are gonna end up, I have some that dont need any trimming some do.

Wizdom I cant believe your build looks as good as it does. That receiver looked like a lightning bolt not once but TWICE lol. Im happy with the way things went. We should have gave more clear instructions for the parkerizing process. next time...

Hot degreasing tank first, then brake clean and dry completely, then sand blast, Air blow off, Brake clean with rubber gloves then into the park tank.

Im pretty sure a first time builder was able to walk away with two functioning rifles AND helped many guys! Good job mike! I asked his secret and he said "I followed the checklist Paul gave me"

Adam and crew it was fun having you guys! you guys got a good crew.
Big thanks to Al "the press pro"
Also, none of this would have been possible with out Paul he put a lot of work into securing a kick *** shop and making sure everything was set up.

wizdumb
04-16-2012, 12:23 AM

Hey guys, did you end up finding extra Harbor Freight punches in the shop?

I just got around to unpacking my box of stuff from the party and it looks like I'm short three.
From left to right in the set, I'm missing the 3rd, 4th, and 5th punch.
