Guys,

Is there any way a list can be started of Machinists in all areas of California where folks wanting guidance on how to finish machine their own 80% AR Lowers. I have seen some names in NorCal and maybe one in San Diego. Anyhoo, just a thought. Thanks, A2

I'm looking for one in the general Bay Area.

There are 2 guys in the Sac area that helps with 80%, both Calgun members.

Check the wanted/service forum and you'll find one of them.

You will probably have more luck in the gunsmithing forum.
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/forumdisplay.php?s=&f=114

Also, you should let folks know when you are ready for anodizing. I know some folks that would be interested in a group anodize party.

I'd be interested in one in Ventura county. Heck if a CNC mill were available to start from a fresh block I'd pay for that too. (is that even legal?)

I think I know what USMCM16A2 is talking about: you either drive north or south to the state borders for a build party, not much in between.

nice build, what upper is that?

The upper is an Armalite C.O.P. Kit. with a 7.5" barrel and a PSA BCG with an MI low profile gas block.. I am actually in the middle of debating if I want to try and sell it and get a dedicated 22LR upper and build the pistol into an 22 rifle.

http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=15003063 link to the upper.

It would be completely legal to do it from scratch out of a fresh block. I do feel sorry for the guy building the CAD program for it though lol. And it would end up pretty pricey after paying for the material to start from scratch with. But there is no reason it can't be done if someone sat down and took the time to do it. There is actually a couple videos on youtube of people doing it.

Well I have downloaded the AR15 lower schematics for a CNC machine; those are freely and widely available. I assume (thats how people get in trouble) that a CNC operator would just have to import the plans and I press "go" on the machine. Its partly why I'd like to find someone nearby that could tell me what I need to provide and how much I could buy the block and time for. Seems like it would be cheaper this way and more convenient especially if they were within an hour's drive of me.

Lexustech48
07-17-2012, 10:23 PM
Assuming you bring it to a build party, and machine the rest of the metal out then assemble with the parts kit, then yes. an 80% build can ONLY be used for personal use and CANNOT be sold.

I would love to build a dedicated 5.56 SASS style rifle along with a carbine for use with 18" barreled uppers. The more I think about it, the more I want to leave my M&P 15 stock with the exception of an optic.

One of these days Ill have enough cash to go to a build party.

Help me wrap my head around an 80% lower thing. You guys are doing this to avoid some Federal government gun grab?

When they came for the Registered black rifles I wasnt a registered black rifle so I didnt speak up.

When they came for the shotgun owners I wasnt a shotgun owner so I didnt speak up.
you get such a filling of knowing
When they came for the handguns I wasnt a handgun owner so I didnt speak up.

When they came for the 80%'ers there was no one left to speak up. What will you do if they ban guns and come for them? Nothing? Hide? Run? Pretend?

If you ever bought ammo, gun magazines, went to a gun show, bought gun supplies in any shape or form, bought targets, went to a gun range, member of the nra, member of a gun forum, have searched or looked at guns online....... etc etc etc they already know about you.

I did my ar pistol this way because its the only way i could get my lower and for the experiance ,Have you ever completed a 80%? or a Ak flat? you get such a great filling out of building your own ,

an 80% build can ONLY be used for personal use and CANNOT be sold.

An 80% lower cannot be built with the INTENTION to sell it, but as long as it has a serial number it CAN be sold at a later time and transferred just like any other lower/firearm.

I'm looking for one in the San Jose area...

Dark Soul Tactical Build Parties - San Jose (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=573827)

Location is pretty close to SJ Fairgrounds. CNC machined lowers, bead-blasting booth, and all of the armoury tools needed to completely assemble a lower and upper. Those guys are awesome, whether you're a seasoned builder or working on your first rifle/pistol.

I'd also direct everyone to my signature. I offer FREE advice and assistance with preparing graphics for laser etching/engraving your shiny new paperweights or complete lowers.

[Edit]And I just realized this is a necro-thread. Carry on.

If you come to the build party you pay to use the mill & jig (same price for both) and that's it. You don't need to buy a jig - the people who need one are those who won't be attending the party. At least that's how I understand it.
