I know most AR's come in the standard 5.56 round. Do any of you guys have an experience with AR's that shoot the 7.62x39? I see there are conversion kits and such. Any thoughts or opinions?

Galati International with chrome barrel if they still have them.

I've been reading about them on another AR website and the only real issue that some people have is magazine issues. Then again some have good luck with CProducts mags. The best luck seems to be with ASC magazines.

The hard part is finding any of the uppers, bolts, barrels in stock. I think the bolt carrier is any AR carrier but the bolt is obviously different to "hold" the 30 caliber round. So I guess if you can find a bolt and barrel you can make your own.

I managed to wander across a complete 7.62x39 upper for sale on another forum and grabbed it. It should ship today but I'm not sure how soon I'll actually get to play with it. The lower it's supposed to go on is naked and lonely.

The C-Prods mags have worked well for me.
The uppers are out there if you look a bit, either from a dealer, in the marketplace here or on Gunbroker.
This is my Colt Sporter x39 setup:

Accuracy is very good with quality factory ammo and my reloads (123grn VMAX atop 24.5grns of 1680), but not so great with Wolf and other cheap imports.
Some people who wanted a .30 AR are now moving over to 300 Blackout, so maybe more used x39 uppers will show up for sale.

With proper magazines, meaning CProducts, I think the combination is excellent. The X39 cartridge doesn't have much recoil, I put a PWRS brake on mine anyway. It can be a challenge finding a good AR rifle brake in the X39 if the barrel is threaded for a standard 5.56 AR device as opposed to "308" AR 10 threading.

regarding accuracy of the X39 cartridge having bought a CZ 527 I think the cartridge itself has fine accuracy. I've put cheap steel cased stuff through the CZ and done handloads, the handloads are better but out to 200 yds the cheap stuff does fine. I'd expect the 5.56 is ultimately more accurate and certainly a wider variety available, but I wouldn't dismiss the X39 on accuracy. It seems OK to me.

I have no ide who made my X39 upper, probably got it from one of the lower end sellers like M & A, Model 1 or Delton and IIRC paid about $450.00 a few years back, BCG included.

My opinion. If a person needs 30cal.Get off the bench and get a 308.I will eat my words when needed.I would like to have a 6.8 and am looking for one now.I reload and find that caliber kind of in between 223-308.

Personally, I like having a .30 upper that works just fine with my standard AR lowers and eats the same ammo as my AKs. I also don't like the price of .308 ammo, nor am I looking to shoot at the ranges it offers. All I need if a 300-yard gun, and the x39 does that all for me.

I started off obsessing over an AK. Then I decided I liked the ammo and ordered it just for fun. Having held a couple AKs at the LGS I found them heavy and with the necessary BB and 10 round limit I decided it would be cumbersome than the AR platform.

As such, the hunt was on for an AR upper in 7.62x39. If the magazine thing works out I'll have the novelty of the "AK round" in a "better" platform. If it stinks I'll resort to an SKS and keep enjoying the cheaper ammo.

Just get a vz 58, its lighter then the AK and you can also use stripper clips, I have one and I love it.

6mmIntl is a match shooter that has been playing with a 7.62x39 AR and doing pretty well with it. Check out his thread:

I've been beat by him and that rifle (multiple times!) at the Chabot silhouette match. Handloading for this cartridge can net good results for mid range shooting.

I have found that I needed a heavier buffer and spring to cycle correctly. I have a Spike's Buffer with a Wolff XS buffer spring. I also use a Wolff XS hammer spring and a Model 1 7.62 x 39 firing pin. The last 2 items help with the tough primers on surplus ammo. I have plenty of C-products mags and sometimes the cartridge rim will hang up on the ribs of the mag. I've had better luck with MWG mags. They are plastic but I've never had a rim hang up on one. One of these days I'm going to try and flatten the rear rib in the C-products mags and see if that helps.

Got one - POF and it's fun to shoot, but having a "short 30" in the same platform as the 5.56 is convenient. I guess I have the opposite point of view and am not all that hot for the 6.8 since I don't reload for these rifles.

FourLoko, if you don't mind me asking, I assume SFV means the San Fernando Valley? Where can you locally shoot that "cheap ammo"? That's been my main holdup in getting a Saiga or an AK, there is nowhere nearby that will let me shoot magnetic.

Where do you shoot your AKs at? Or do you buy the Yugo ammo only?

If it stinks I'll resort to an SKS and keep enjoying the cheaper ammo.

Good question. Wish I had a better answer. Yes, I did buy some Yugo so I can shoot at Angeles range.

Also picked up some Golden Tiger in hopes of shooting it at Oaktree in Newhall. I don't recall them being fussy about metal jackets or steel core. Problem is they lack a full time rifle range.

My bushmaster upper had tons of problems. I threw in a Galati enhanced firing pin, wolff power spring, had a feed ramp job, and opened up the mag lips on all my cprod/asc mags. NOW she eats everything!

This past weekend I started having problems ejecting Yugo surplus. The ejecting round jams with the new round that is being striped from the mag. I haven't had problems with russian surplus Fiochi or Winchester. Anyone else have problems with Yugo?

Have you thought of using .300 AAC blackout? All you need is a new barrel. If you reload, you can make your own rounds for pretty cheap too.

Maybe you have a very strong buffer spring or to heavy buffer weight, yugo is a little bit under load.

I was wondering if that was the case. If you saw my previous post, I have a Wolff XS buffer spring and a Spike's Tactical buffer. I haven't had any previous extraction problems with this setup. Thanks for the feedback

Yep, use s light buffer spring and observe. 100% that's the culprit.. To be honest my setup under buffer tube is David tub's spring Flatwire .308 spring and standard buffer weight. That's it it will eat all surplus ammos. lol!

I have a x39 AR from Galati and have not had any problems with the upper or my ASC or older C Products mags. I have C Products in 10/30 and ASC mags in 5 and 10 round flavors and all have worked perfectly. I believe Galati uses mainly Model 1 Sales parts for their 7.62x39 uppers, I ordered "their" enhanced firing pin and when I swapped it with the stock pin they looked identical but I don't have a micrometer to know for sure. I also ordered the Wolff XP hammer spring but I haven't needed it for any of the current production ammo Wolf/Tula/Winchester/Hornady maybe if I ever decide to get some surplus I will install it. Well around 750 rounds through it and not one single failure so I am pretty darn happy. I paid $515 a few months ago and after reading some of the issues that pops up on Google searches I can say that I have been pleasantly surprised.

The caliber is GTG! :) Just get a wolff extra power hammer spring, some ASC mags and enhanced firing pin IF you're not running an ARP bolt... can use standard buffer and buffer spring.

Hey hows it goin. I got myself an AR in 7.62x39 20" HBAR from Model 1 Sales. I have over 800rds through it of wolf steel case and yugo corrosive ammo. I had a standard LPK with no extra power spring, just gave it a trigger job for a cleaner pull. I have C products 10rd and a 6.5 grendel 10/25rd mag that both work flawlessly (im lookin to get the 6.5 or 6.8 15rder ASC mag and convert it to 10 as well) I love it and I have had no problems with it at all. It has little recoil (im a 30cal guy) and I can manage it very well. If you (or anyone else) have any questions or anything please let me know, I can pretty much answer all you may want to know about this cal in the AR platform. Or you can visit my YouTube channel V8MERC124 same as my username here. http://www.youtube.com/user/V8merc124?feature=mhsn) and you can see the vids I have on it. I have a review, dissasembly, magazine options, 320yd shoot, and a separate review for the upper and lower (aero precision).
