View Full Version : Finally some progress on my PSL build

I've finally been able to make some progress on my PSL build. I have picked up a few tools to make more headway. I can tell you a good quality drill press with a good x-y table makes removing old long rivets a less stressful procedure.

I decided to go with a Rhineland Arms stock kit for the length of pull addition as well as US made part. And going with a shorter barrel ala hacksaw and mancave gunsmithing.

Looks good! Can I shoot it? Lol

To shoot it right now you'd better have some strong arms to hold the barrel group in as it's not pressed together or pinned. It's going to take me some more time to machine down for the barrel threads using my current form of machining. "emery cloth lathe work" and another inch off the front.

are you doing the rivets and barrel pressing yourself? if you are I could use a hand with that. I have a demilled psl kit ready to go. I redid the wood and found a butt pad extension to lengthen the stock cuz Im too cheap for the rhineland kit. as gorgeous as it is. yours looks great btw.

You can get just the buttstock from Rhineland if that's all you want. When I pressed out the barrel stub it didn't take much pressure at all, and the replacement barrel is looking like it's going to go in the same way. On the other hand my barrel pin wouldn't budge no matter what I did, and I wound up having to drill it out. I'm going to make a rivet tool for my air hammer and go about them that way I believe. Rivet and bucking bar.

like that? I got the barrel pressed out and the barrel pin out. I just need to rivet the trunnions and press the barrel back in and press the barrel pin in.

how long did it take you to get that far?

Mags are becoming scarce on the market. Apex put some up for sale last week. I would suggest getting some if you don't already have any before they sell out.

Looks like a great build. I can't wait to do mine. I'm waiting for Nodak to do a round of receivers.

Did you have to do anything special to get the Bolton FSB to fit?

Where did you get that combo FSB + Gas Block? and did it take some custom fitting?

Carsgunsandchics, nice looking setup you've got there. If I may make a suggestion. If you're going to do the rivets without a press I recommend using your rivet punch and a manual hammer instead of the air hammer. I did my first ak with an air hammer and managed to put a nice cresent moon ding in the receiver. Doing it manually will give you much more controll.

You may be waiting for the rest of your life. I don't think NoDak is doing another run of PSL receivers. As I understand it that was a one time deal they did for TGI. Your best bet is to scour the ak specific forums and gunbroker.

To get to this point I may have 10hours into it, including the de-mill. I cut the time way down having that drill press with machinist vice to drill out the long rivets and barrel pin.

As for the gas block sight combo I got that from Venom Tactical https://www.venomtactical.com/shop/gas-block-p-72.html?eCOMid=kbuldb9d9hj0bpoukj2fj1s8o2 it's literally a bolt on part after machining down the barrel. And I have machined down the barrel after cutting it down with nothing but emery cloth, that is where most of the time has been spent and the block now comes machined for 90 and 45 degree ports.

The receiver is an older one from Tennessee Guns/Cugir, that came with two mags from another member here. And I picked up one of the 4 mags and the mag pouch from the last Reno gun show from Desert Fox Sales. There was another bunch just put up on Gunbroker and they seem to come in waves.

As for the rivets, I was thinking of hammering them then following up with the air for aesthetics.

I stand corrected! I just saw a thread in gunsmithing where 858casper858 links to this thread (http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_2_245/211036_PSL_receivers_.html) on ARFCOM. Apparently the good people at NDS are considering another run of PSL receivers.:hurray:

They said they were considering doing a round and asked people to email requests for receiver style they wanted to be put on a list. This was over on the AKforum in their subforum.

We are now compiling a list of those interested in buying PSL type receivers. To be added to the list, please send me an email to info@nodakspud.com. Include in the email your full name, how many PSL type receivers you want - either square back or scalloped back, and if you want the receiver(s) to have a left side optics rail installed. Thanks.

Add your names if interested. Im sure the more that add the more they will be motivated.

Ordered up a replacement barrel pin for the one I had to drill out along with a Norinco SVD flash hider. We'll see what else this will result in at a later date. I'm wondering if with the shorter barrel it will help with the overgassing that these are known for, or go the other way and need more.

For thinning the barrel with the emory cloth, did you just wrap the cloth around the barrel and "polish" it or did you chuck the barrel in a lathe to spin against it?

I did it by hand, if I had a lathe to chuck it in I would of saved a whole lot of time and hand pain.

Nicoroshi was showing me how to use a drill press. He pulls a bullet, then taps the projectile upside down into the muzzel. That is the chuck end(top). Then take primer out of spent casing, put a small peice of tape on the shoulder to keep it from spinning and put it in the chamber. This will be on the table end(bottom). Then take a piece of wood with a chopped pin punch as a centering point. The pin will go into the primer pocket as you raise the table, pinching the barrel between table and chuck. This will keep chuck from falling out.DO NOT try just throwing your barrel in a drillpress without lower support.Hope this helps

That's a great idea but even with my shortened barrel it won't work as I have a benchtop model.

I just have to test fire it and then do a finish job on the wood and metal.

Nicely built :)

What type of receiver is that?

And not to highjack the thread but why is centerfire not willing to ship the PSL/FPK square back receivers to CA ? WTF is going on?

It's an older Tennessee Guns import from Romania.

The mount is designed for a red-dot so it is supposed to sit further back than a magnifying scope, the POSP scope slides all the way forward as the body is much longer than a red-dot. What looks bubba? The unfinished metal?

I like them in original form, may be SVD flash hider ,poly stock ,Krinkov look is not for PSL IMO, be careful when shooting, I hope this red dot will hold on . Again it your rifle ,dont mind what people are saying. Just go and shoot hell out of it:)

That hider is just to cover the threads for now. It is going to have a SVD flash hider or a good brake, depending on how it cycles without all that barrel and possible other mods.

I do like the folding stock mech conversion he did, not so much the stock but the mech change itself. And definitely be interesting to shoot that thing.

Took it to the Range today. Found out today that with the stock sized gas port with a short barrel it won't flow enough gas long enough to run the bolt all the way to the rear trunnion. Basically causing it to short stroke and cause stovepipes. And the recoil was equivalent of a AR. Needless to say this way overcomes the overgassing prone to the PSL platform. If I had any heavyball I would of gave that a shot and would of probably had no issues. I ran approx 60rounds thru it within 30min and was just trying to get it functioning properly, not on paper just for checking mechanics.

What ever happened with this build? Did you sort out the short stroking issue?

Just enlarged the gas port last night, and bringing it to the range Saturday. There is about 1inch from end of barrel to the gas port, and doesn't have enough dwell time for full cycling.

Carsgunsandchics

Ok went to the range Saturday and was finally able to get the rifle to fully cycle reliably. I wound up with a 1/8 port size but I am going to try an insert in the Bolton gasblock/sight combo to adjust to for different weight ammo. I fired over 100 rounds for function testing and adjusting but will now have to just sight it in.

I've been using it at the local silhoutte shoots with iron sights but the Leupold and mount etc is new. I haven't done to bad with it, especially with distances ranging from 200 meters out to 500 meters with the irons.
