I got that fever too! I was saving up to buy a KAC SR-15 E3 upper, but when I saw a San Diego build party, I gave in. Built the AKM, now I want a 74. It seems like the AR project is going to take a back seat for a while.

While there has always been a certain mystique to the AK series, I have to really credit my purchase to the anti-gun folks who have demonized it to the point of insane coolness! The AK-74 will likely not be anywhere nearly as nice as my M4 but it is like 10,000% more evil!

Maybe that's it my Mini-14 is such a kind sweetheart with it's gentle 10 rounders and peaceful hogue stock.

I need a sinister AK that obviously has a black aura of wickedness...

I grew up around AK47's and R4's in South Africa and my dad's side of the family are in Bosnia/Serbia so it must be genetics that I crave one.

I am thinking of getting my 4th AK. I have 2 AR and 3 AK. Go figure.

I was so impressed with my friend's Saiga 7.62x39 that he got a couple years ago for $330 I wanted to sell my Mini I paid $850 for... (ripped off I know).

I'm glad I still have my Mini but man you can't beat a rifle like an AK for sub $400. I just saw the build party thing.. Building my own would be facinating and make the rifle that much more sentimental.

Guess I should start researching Saiga conversion or wasr.. build my own... think of good excuses to wife

Hey quick question though: how do I achieve maximum evil from the ak-74 do you think a folder or collapsible stock would inspire more evil for the anti-gun crowd? Vertical grip on AK = evil? Oh yeah and definitely black furniture LOL!

I have to admit my AK kit addiction has gotten a little out of hand as of late. I really had to tone things down in wake of possibly losing my job.

I'll make it easy for you. AKs are inexpensive and simple firearms that are exceptionally reliable. They are far from precision rifles. Most people use the cheapest ammo they can find which only makes their accuracy and precision even worse. Warsaw length stocks are uncomfortable for many shooters. I like the look of wood furniture but, I hate shooting AKs with Surplus wooden stocks. They hurt my cheek after a few shots. So, in the end, AKs are crappy rifles and very impractical handguns. However, they are fun and easy to manufacture! I stongly urge building one instead of buying one.

Huh? Do you disagree with something I said? Can you find any techical inaccuracies in my statement? Seriously, AKs are just cheaply made reliable guns. That's the whole reason that they have become the icon that they are.

Do you get an AK with every Toyota pick up truck purchase? Watching CNN I see all of these middle eastern guys in the back of Toyotas fighting for whatever cause with AKs. I've never bought a Toyota here in the US but I don't think the same applies.

I had to buy my own LR308.

This is funny to me. I HAD an ak up until about a week ago when I sold it. It was an Arsenal SGL-23. I got a couple AR's and just decided I'm more of an AR guy. Maybe one day I'll get another. But for right now, good riddance to Euro crap. AMERICA!!!

What about an AK that shoots 5.56? What is the best one? I think it would be cool to shoot the same ammo my AR shoots out of an AK. I like the 7.62 better but all of the ranges I go to will only allow non-magnetic so that about does it for me. The Yugo corrosive looks fine but what about when that supply dries up? Guess I could buy a 7.62 AK and learn how to reload, that's always an option.

I dig AKs, they are just different than ARs, in a good way. They are a heck of a lot tougher. I love my AR but I treat it gently, it would be nice to have a rifle built to take abuse.

When it comes to "cheap ammo", yea, it isn't normally as consistant as more expensive ammo.

When I was talking about about rifles, I probably should have used "inexpensive" instead of "cheap".
