About how much should I expect to pay for a S&W 686 Plus 6"? MSRP is $790, but what does it actually go for new or used in good condition? Anybody know if a gun store in OC has one? I'm fairly new to guns, and haven't bought a handgun before.

I paid $525.00 for my 6" 686 Plus about 1.5 years ago on a Smith & Wesson Day at the local shop. A couple months before that, I paid $625.00 for my 4" 686 Plus - though NOT on the Smith & Wesson Day. This is in the SF bay area. Both guns were new. The prices haven't changed much.

The 4" 686 Plus was my first gun. One of the best .357 mags on the planet. Have never had a single problem with either.

What's Smith & Wesson Day? Is that something that shops do regularly, or was it just a sale there?

Thanks for the info. :D

Used in good condition they usually go in the $450-$500 range. If you can find one pre-internal lock even a little more. HTH c good

4"-Plus at Boise gunshow 6 months ago. NIB, $450 + sales tax from a dealer with maybe 150 miscellaneous new guns. I'd guess about 1/3 more since it's CA.

Alternatives might include an older (60's-70's) Model 66, M27, or M28. All have a lot more hand crafting than current Smiths, all continue to appreciate in value. Most will be a LOT less than $800.

Re the Smith & Wesson Day, I'm not sure if it is something that many gun shops do. Reps from S&W are at the shop, everything is on sale - guess they just try to move as many guns as possible.

This one was at Angeles. It was a terrible day. The bridge was washed out so I had to take a 50 mile detour.
