I'm in the SFV if you want to trade that 7.62x39 for some 7.62x54 ... still won't work in your FAL, but you'll be getting closer.

that just means that your brother needs to buy an AK or SKS :D

At least it was an inexpensive lesson in calibers versus cartridges. Yeah there are several different cartridges that have 7.62 in the name, and unfortunately he picked one that shoots so poorly (IMO) my own SKS hasn't been shot in a few years. You're looking for 7.62 NATO or 7.62x51 and maybe 3x the cost per round.

I was surprised at what he paid for 200 rounds when I purchased a box of 308WIN for him for his b-day and the one box cost 2x one of the boxes in today's bulk pack...

Is your brother new to the gun scene? He needs to learn a little more about his stuff. Not trying to be a dick but no one here wants to read a thread that says, "My brother shot 7.62x39 out of his FAL and got hurt really bad"

Educate him so he doesn't get hurt or hurt other people.

Look at it this way.... Your brother learned a valuable yet somewhat inexpensive lesson, you learned a valuable FREE lesson.

Shoot me a PM if the deal falls through with the other Calgunners.

Yes my bro is a noob and he made a mistake. Valuable lesson for both of us. Thankfully a safe lesson too!!

sounds like you're a bit of a noob too. Markings are there for a reason. When they're just a lot of numbers, they're really being specific. Colloquial names (Luger/parabellum) are less often as important but can be.

Sounds like I should take that FAL off your hands so your brother doesnt make the same mistake : )

Lol, you are def a rookie too if you really need to look at a FAL to figure out what its chambered in. no shame in it, nobody is born an expert.

Thats ok, everyone makes mistakes. My homeboy, former marine, friend to several leos, all around nice, smart guy, asked me why the fifty cal was banned, but not the seven six two. "everyone knows 762 is bigger than 50"

I also overheard a guy talking a few months back about his cool new 12 gauge, with a .410 choke? imagine what that would be like.

Consider it just a lesson learned. it could have been the other way around and been a costlier mistake. but like others have said, stay away from 7.62x54r, although that might "seem" like a good deal too.

^ Thanks paratroop! Yes, rookie mistake for both of us. I have no experience with a FAL and have not studied up on it since I don't own one. I also am pleased that I found CGN to get good advice from those experience people out there willing to help. Great resource. I hope lessons like this can be shared by me with others someday just the same.

Respect, Survivor.

p.s., my buddy just left for A-stan, he's a paratrooper. You guys and gals are appreciated and venerable. Thank you!

Tell him not to be too hard on himself. My landlord's dad, who has been collecting guns all his life, wanted to buy his grandson his first .22LR rifle and found one at a gun show, not realizing it was .22 Hornet.

"Ummmmm, why didn't your dad just go to Big 5 and buy a Ruger or a Marlin for less?"

 "I wish I knew."
